Seeing Through Windows

Forrester: Businesses need Vista, should shun the Mac

Mac acolytes might not like to hear this, but a just-released report from Forrester Research concludes that large businesses should upgrade to Vista as soon as possible, and forgo the Mac. Even Linux, the report concludes, is a no-go for big companies.

The report, titled "Building The Business Case For Windows Vista," offers a variety of reasons that corporations should move to Vista as soon as they can. Here's an excerpt from its first reason:

For large businesses, there’s no viable alternative. According to our latest hardware survey, Microsoft operating systems are powering 99% of North American and European enterprise PCs and 97% of small to medium-size business (SMB) PCs.

The report notes that Vista SP1 has begun to spur companies to deploy Vista. It then asks the question, "What about Linux or Mac OS X?" Here's its unequivocal answer:

These operating systems have certainly found their way into niche environments within businesses and select industries: Apple shows up frequently in marketing and scientific research departments and in the healthcare and retail segments; Novell, Red Hat, and even Ubuntu are used in financial services firms and government agencies. But switching over thousands of users at a time from Windows to one of these alternative platforms is simply not a viable option.

I couldn't agree more. The Mac is well-suited for certain niches. But for big, enterprise-wide deployments, it's simply not practical for companies to make the switch. As I've written before, there are a variety of reasons virtualization software for Mac OS X won't solve the problem.

The bottom line: If you're a big business, you're a Windows shop. And Vista is the way to go.

What People Are Saying

Bring down Preston!!

Someone please put a gag on this guy, he's exactly the kind of ignoramus that makes my country a dumb user.

We are better off not replying so he will get no hits and loose his job.

He's got a BA in poo eating.

I've just converted 5 high schools to OSX and the kids love it, teachers love it, even windows loves it... more learning, more productivity. Better system.

How much were they paid

When I see article like this I wonder how much Microsoft paid for the research.

If companies were to throw away Microsoft completely and Go 100% MAC then every one woould say don't go to Windoz it is too big an change.

I saw one writer say he had mac's in some areas but then suggested going to window because it was too hard to integrate. Why not go all MACS then you would not have to worry aboyt integrating with Windoz. You can find all the applications on mac that you can find on Windoz. Oops Unless you are a company that likes games on your systems.

Windows Vista SP1 Wreaks Havoc On Some PCs, Users Complain

you're obviously right Preston, how could businesses possibly miss out on all the fun?

Try googling for that topic and see how good Vista would be in the workplace.

btw .. you copied 2 quotes, wrote 15 lines, and have 20 critical comments. I suppose in your business getting noticed is a plus (regardless of good or bad), but was it really worth it?

Taking turns with the Kool-Aid

It's pretty obvious that Preston and Forrester have been taking turns drinking the M$ Kool-Aid. Neither has any credibility. Spending a lot of money to break your apps is simply not a viable business option.

And where does Mr. Gralla get off saying, "Mac acolytes might not want to hear this"? Even the XP acolytes don't want to hear this crap after testing Vista.

funny

and by the way, us "Mac acolytes" just LOVE to hear baloney like yours.

It made us laugh back in 1997, we laugh even harder now :-D

ridiculous

Business need Vista the same way some businessmen needs to pay for "protection" so that their racketeering "protector" won't smash their head in with a sledge hammer.

Windows business have no choice to stick to MS because getting rid of such legacy sometimes will defeat switching to Mac or Linux.

Nowadays, for every phony 'Forrester' report, you see dozens recommending exactly the opposite: that corporations should stay away from Vista and switch to MAC.

what planet are these guys from?

"But switching over thousands of users at a time from Windows to one of these alternative platforms is simply not a viable option."

And replacing thousands of PCs with Vista, then migrating all of the applications onto that OS is a viable option?

There have been hundreds of posts on this subject from IT managers all across the web. I've yet to see one that is in favour of migrating to Vista. These are the troops in the front lines. Why isn't anyone listening to them? Do these consultants/analysts think they know better than the guys that have to live with these systems everyday?

But migrating computers to a

But migrating computers to a new operating system is exactly what windows does every time they bring out a new product line.

They force their hand, and Vista sucks the big fat one. So does Office 2007...

If you’ve every manage an OSX environment then you will see that it is the forbidden fruit that eve ate to grand the kingdom of heaven to earth. Pure bliss

Businessess need Vista, should shun Mac

The cat is out of the bag. The only reasons the IT employees of large businesses and the IT consultants for large businesses (read Forrester) would ever recommend Vista for anything, let alone over the Mac is to insure they keep their jobs. Fooling the executives in the corporations to keep Vista (which is not hard to do, since using the FUD practice works so well in this case) guarantees continued employment for the entire IT staff, and most likely will require increasing staff, even during these cost reduction times. Dealing with Vista has been and will be a nightmare, and who better to come to the rescue than the IT people who created the nightmare in the first place.

Forrester is the fox telling the hens that the furry Vista is good for the hens.

Forrester

I find it interesting that ALL of the comments are on the same track.

A year or two ago blogs like this would have a string of supporting comments, now people are seeing Vista for what it is and rejecting these stupid "reports" that are no more than MS sponsered ad campaigns.

It's bad enough that companies like Forrester sell their credibility to MS, do publications like Computerworld have to blow their credibility too?

There is NO business case to be made for spending millions on PC upgrades to run an operating system that offers few (if any) benefits in the business world, not to mention the nightmares of trying to migrate a large complex system over.

Migration costs a LOT of money, there has to be a reason to do it. Vista offers none.
