Free lecture on Internet fraud in New York City

On Thursday July 16th, the New York Personal Computer User Group presents a lecture on Internet fraud.
The lecturer, Fred Kahn, is an eBay Education Specialist, professional photographer and, of course, a techie. He has been to the White House to speak with government officials about Internet fraud.
The lecture, Why Internet Fraud is so Successful and How to Avoid It will cover a host of scams: email scams, phishing, phone cons, credit check scams - a notice that your account is about to expire, identity theft - and more. As Fred puts it "The criminal world has figured out that the internet is the easiest and best way to ply their scams."
Job posting scams are also a biggie. Fred says that on every job listing site, "people are listing jobs available that don't exist just so they can get you to click on their website and sell you some fly-by-night, get-rich-quick scheme."
His experience has been that many of the jobs on Monster.com do not exist. This is in line with an article from February in the Wall Street Journal It Isn't Always a Job Behind an Online Job Posting that I mentioned on this blog previously.

Fred is bringing literature from the FBI to hand out at the meeting. The lecture is free and open to all.
