The president gets the boot(s)

Call it ShoeTube.

During a press conference on his farewell tour of Iraq, President George Bush was attacked by a journalist who hurled his shoes at him from a distance of roughly 20 feet. You can see the video here:

For an old guy Bush proved surprisingly nimble, ducking the aerial footwear with ease. Then again, he's had a lot of practice ducking the press over the past eight years.

After the attack, the president said, "If you want the facts, it's a size 10," which might be the wittiest comeback of his entire presidency.

This works on so many levels it's hard to know where to start. It's certainly a fascinating commentary on a) how the Iraqis feel about Bush, b) how they feel about their shoes, c) how disturbingly easy it would be to take a shot at the president, assuming you were armed with something more lethal than a pair of Florsheims.

For me it's a fascinating exercise in viral video. When I first saw this video, posted to the Talking Points Memo blog, about 220 people had viewed it. That was at around 6 pm last night, eastern time. This morning, about 14 hours later, it had been viewed more than 378,000 times -- and that's just one of hundreds of versions of the video. Seven of them had garnered more than 200,000 views apiece as I write this.

Why? Because it is the perfect piece of viral video: it's short and strange; it seems to say something, though exactly what is open to interpretation; and I think I can safely say that nobody has ever seen anything like it before.

Meanwhile, pent-up punsters acros the Web jumped in with both feet, so to speak.

The AP: "It gives fresh meaning to the term 'shooed away.'

London Times: "Bush says he saw 'sole' of Iraqi shoe attacker."

The BBC noted that the attacker, TV journalist Muntadar al-Zaidi, was "following in the footsteps" of other Arab protestors for whom references to feet are the deepest possible insult.

And, naturally, countless bloggers made snide jokes about "waiting for the other shoe to drop."

In the BYT (Before YouTube) era, this story would have faded from the media within a day. Now it has the potential to become a meme and last indefinitely. I predict before the week is out someone will take the footage, create a montage, and set it to music.

Even though Bush responded well to the attacks, for his supporters it could end up being the Legacy From Hell -- the final thing Americans will remember about his administration long after all the speeches and sound bites have faded.

Video is powerful, especially when it's in the hands of the people.

What People Are Saying

What the headline should be..

Tynan shows his liberal bias once again. I
wonder what the story would have been if King
Obama had a shoe thrown at him??!!

One thing you have to wonder is where was the Secret Service when this shoe was thrown? It
seems like it should have been knocked off
course before GWB had to duck!

Messiah Obama

not King Obama.

Bush Said,

Bush said. "They ... said this doesn't represent the Iraqi people, but that's what happens in free societies where people try to draw attention to themselves."

What part doesn't Bush get, why can't he just face it, his Ego got in the way and he's guilty of killing many people who had nothing to do with the extremist muslim religion.

His quick fix and aggressive approach to taking out terrorist, FAILED!

While the little Bush boy was so busy playing Cowboys and Indians, our homeland was falling to it's knees without oversite.

It's a mess there and a mess here, the shoe throwing says it ALL!

If Bush apologized to the people, could we drop to our knees in compassion for his courage and vulnerability, I could!

Thank GOD!

Finally, someone has spoken out for millions of people in Irag and America, a strong message without words. Hats off and thank you, Muntadhar al-Zaidits.

May he be released in the name of freedom of expression without harm to an ignorant American President.

Thank you, Muntadhar al-Zaidits, you've spoken for MILLIONS!

Tammy

You're kidding right?...

Give me a break,
Hats off and thank-you?!?!?!?!? The guy should be jailed like any other individual guilty of an attack. “freedom of expression” does not imply freedom of assault. I may not be a huge supporter of Bush’s Foreign policy (or many of America’s presidents for that matter), But had the guy had better aim, Bush could have been hurt, even seriously.

Don’t tell me you’re advocating violence as an appropriate means of disagreeing with someone but if you are, come here and I’ll swat you with my footwear…

Grow up.

Oh, Yes, thank you Muntadhar al-Zaidits

We all know you would have been so much better off if Saddam Hussein was still in power.
Long live Muslim dictators! Long live Islamic fundamentalist terrori... er, I mean freedom fighters!

well, he'd have several thousand more countrymen

....and a lot fewer widows and orphans.

Really, when are the Bushies going to give up on the whole "it was worth it to get rid of Saddam" meme they've been pushing? It's like blowing up your house to get rid of a rat.

Personally, I think this

Personally, I think this Kodak Moment from President Bush's Victory Lap is going to be remembered for years as a signature event. It reminded me of that time Anita Bryant got pied!

His father couldn't go anywhere after leaving office without being reminded of how he vomited all over the Japanese Prime Minister.

This Ducking the Shoes incident is far more embarrassing for President Bush to those living in the Middle East who understand the severity of the insult.

Even though most of us wholeheartedly support Bush's professed principles - including freedom, human rights, democracy, the rule of law and the sanctity of human life - we object to his policies in the region.

I expect al-Zaidi will be martyred over what will probably amount to a 2 year stint in jail. But lets face it, he would be spending a lot more time behind bars if this had happened in the United States.

one day story

Had this happened a year ago, or when Bush was still a "credible threat", it would have remained news. I think though all eyes are off Bush, and on Obama (and his new dog).

Sadly the guy who threw the shoes will probably spend the rest of their life in Guantanamo, but the media won't cover this story very long. It'll stick around as a humorous video for a few weeks at best.

As Bond would say "he got the boot". ;)
