Getting Started with Arduino

I've spoken before about my desire to try some different development ideas with the Arduino.
With a new year starting, I'm even more tempted to find some sort of new project to spend my spare time on. I'm not interested in robots, but it seems that plenty of others are interested in constructing all manner of different robots. But robots don't really interest me.
I've just noticed that O'Reilly have announced a book on the topic, Getting Started with Arduino. This just might give me more impetus to try an Arduino project of some description out.
All suggestions for a project welcome, until I find find my own.
