Computing From the Front Lines

Going back to pen and paper to reduce printing costs

We just had our boiler serviced yesterday, and I noticed that the engineer has gone back to filling out a printed paper form with a traditional form of instrument called a pen.

For the last 7 or 8 years the engineers have been carrying around one of the Toughbook's with a portable printer and printing out the details of the engineer report. I've always actually been impressed with the way they set up the machines and printed out the reports. For such a large force of non-computer users (particularly 7 years ago) to be regularly using a laptop and portable printer to produce the reports was an interesting logistical and training issue.

Now it's more common place for people to have computers in their homes, the backwards step of returning to pen and paper is a bit odd.

The reason? The cost of the printer cartridges for the printer far exceeded the cost of pre-printing the forms and having the engineers fill out the forms by hand.

What People Are Saying

My company has been

My company has been outfitting our maintenance field techs with blackberries & a web based maintenance software. We want to keep the ability to track/search the work digitally, save on data entry time for our administrative staff & still keep the techs' productivity up in the field. If the customer wants a copy of the report, it is emailed to them in pdf format. There are still some reports to be printed out, but time, paper & storage savings are already paying for the equipment.
