Going out of business sale! Buy XP before it's too late!

"Last Chance!" Read the e-mail ad from Dell's small-business division. "June 18th is the last day you can choose your operating system: Windows XP or Windows Vista."

That's not true at all as Gregg Keizer points out in FAQ: XP deathwatch, T minus 5 weeks, but there is enough truth in it that Dell's not being shy about saying "act fast, because after June 18, Windows XP will no longer be offered on Dell laptops and desktops."

I don't recall ever seeing any company advertising the 'old' product over the 'new' product so strongly before, but Vista's stink has grown so strong that it makes good business sense to promote XP over Vista. Has anyone ever been actually able to make a solid case for using Vista over XP? I haven't seen one.

Of course you can still buy XP Pro for your new systems. You and your OEM just have to pretend that you're buying Vista Business or Vista Ultimate and then 'downgrade' your Vista system to XP Pro. You get the operating system you really want and Ballmer gets to continue to lie like a rug about how pleased he is with Vista sales.

You can also, of course, choose to buy Ubuntu Linux from Dell, or several other Linuxes from other vendors, not to mention Mac OS X from Apple. But, again, what I find really interesting about Dell's ads is that what it says is that people really want XP, not Vista.

I doubt that Microsoft will change its position but InfoWorld's Save Windows XP petition is still alive and kicking. If you really want XP, and most of the Windows-friendly people I know do, you can still sign up.

So, stopping reading this blog already and put your electronic vote where your operating system and let's keep XP really alive until Windows 7 shows up.

What People Are Saying

XP is much more stable

Microsoft has made a blunder with VISTA and it's the customers that have to suffer the consequences. As an application developer, working with VISTA has caused many issues. Things that work under XP, don't in VISTA. I think Microsoft should revisit this whole idea.

Question: When Windows 7

Question: When Windows 7 ends up being nothing more than a dud, will you continue to insist on being able to use XP? I'll stick with Linux, thank you very much...

Vista Users cannot downgrade to XP

I bought a new HP laptop in 12/2007 with Vista preinstalled, of course. Unfortunately, I cannot remove Vista as there are no XP drivers available from HP (Realtek sound) or Fujitsu (Sata hard drive) to allow XP to be installed. So HP computer buyers are stuck with Vista or maybe we should move on to Linux?

I just moved my HP laptop to Opensuse 11

OpenSuse 11 works fantastic on my HP Laptop. Much better than the pre-installed Vista. Picked up the sound and network just fine, it even found the built in webcam and TV tuner!

Novell/Suse Linux is HP's Linux partner

Right, I buy HP, I think the keyboards are nice and have read many a great review about them and they have some nice looking computers. UH someone swears Macs are attractive. Please please anyone send me a link of one. I keep seing square, not ugly but nothing really nice looking Mac notebooks.

Anyway back to topic. I bought a tx1000. Google hard, someone out there has your drivers. Yes, HP is possbily going to lose customers with this unless they start offering Suse as an alternative.

Fortunately, didn't ya know, they make all their stuff in CHINA. So, they use the same parts. Unless you brought something totally brand new, like the tx1000 series, then chances are last years version had XP and that means the drivers do exist for what you have.

Suse is their partner, Novell rather so HP's probably do run quite well with Suse.

More Linuxes seem to have good HP support though.

I use sidux or Mandriva. Both support my tx1000 and my older zv5000us series. Both ordered and shipped from US to me overseas cause they cost twice as much in China for less when they're made here...

The XP drivers are out there

The XP drivers are out there but you will have to scrounge for them. The realtek drivers you can find from the realtek site. You can find them... i had to re-image a HP machine last week and there is no XP support/drivers on the web site.

A solution of sorts

May be Microsoft should call Windows 7, MS Time Machine, which in reality is nothing more that a fancy buzz word wrapped around their old XP code base, and of course charge the adjusted rate for their “new” product.

It pleases everyone concerned, XP uses can upgrade, with confidence that nothing will break, in the process although they not really guaranteed any new features either, the nervous Nelly's who hate Vista, will all instantly fall in love with such a wonderfully robust and stable OS, that everyone will agree that Redmond finally got right.

Microsoft, can breath a sight of relief as this release will stay the execution of people leaving the windows camp in the droves to Linux, Macs or something in fact anything else just so long as it's not MS, for at least another couple of years.

They save a packet on R&D, and can concentrate on actually providing timely, and relevant security, and program updates for the OS, and finally they can guarantee with a fair amount of certainty a specific date for their product launch.

Silly Anti-Vista Hysteria

Silly anti-Vista hysteria is fashionable in Geekworld, but in The Real World, Vista SP1 works just fine.

Vista just works!

Well of course Vista works! If you are happy just watching the boot process that goes on until the batteries are just about dead on your laptop, then a few oooooo's and aahhhhh's over the pretty picture on the screen before you shut it down, you will be very happy with Vista. If you think that the proper design of an operating system is similar to a wrecking ball, ie. it crushes your computer to bits, takes everything that it has just to boot, has millions of page faults to show the about box, you will be VERY happy with Vista.
If you have ANY idea that an operating system is NOT an application, and is there to provide basic services for real applications, you will recognize that Vista is TOTAL GARBAGE.

Monopoly

If a real business had a product that was selling well but they did not want to continue production, they could sell it to another business who was interested. M$ cannot do that because the buyer would be big competition unless M$ were to get out of the OS business. M$ is a monopoly built upon the special relationship to the PC granted by IBM so many years ago. If they sold XP the monopoly would pop.

So, they have to kill XP to preserve the monopoly. I wonder if they will write it off for taxes... XP must be worth billions. Nope. IRS would be crazy to accept that. Deliberately creating a loss is not allowed. One has to try to make money. That is how crazy M$ and dealing with M$ is. A product worth billions must be thrown away because it interferes with the next scheme of the monopoly: keeping prices and turnover of product as high as possible.
