Good News, and we can expect more

Last month the Authentication & Online Trust Alliance (AOTA) released a report (download available here), the 2008 State of Email Authentication and The Internet Trust Ecosystem. They had good news to report, too; in the wake of all the negative publicity that many banks and e-commerce establishments experienced because of viruses and phishing schemes, a majority of them are now actively adopting protective security measures.
I think the most significant AOTA finding is that now, over half of the legitimate email sent worldwide is authenticated. And our banks are proving that they're committed to protecting consumers by adopting authentication methods, as well. Over 1,300 FDIC member institutions have adopted authentication.
I was glad to see in the report that "The AOTA is calling on all brand owners to implement email authentication at the top level corporate domain within the next six months. Those brands who adopt will be taking a step forward in protecting their consumers, brands, and stockholders. Those that fail will realize a competitive disadvantage and expose their brands to an unacceptable level of potential exploits." That should make it clear to us as consumers that we have the right to expect that establishments with which we carry out e-commerce implement effective authentication practices.
