Google cleans Microsoft's clock in latest search rankings

The latest figures from Nielsen Online are out for the search market, and it's good news for Google, and bad for Microsoft. Google now holds 61.25 of the search market to Microsoft's 11.4%. And things are only getting worse for Microsoft --- and better for Google.

Below are the latest results. To see the full press release and figures yourself, go to this page, then click the link next to "Nielsen Online Announces October U.S. Search Share Rankings."

It's bad enough that Microsoft only has 11.4% of the market. Even worse is that it's seriously headed in the wrong direction. Its share of the search market dropped 19% in the last year, while Google gained 8.1%

If Microsoft needed any more evidence that buying Yahoo would be bad idea, this chart should seal the deal. Yahoo's market share dropped 12% in the last year, to 16.9% of the search market. Buying a company whose market share is dropping isn't the way to solve the search problem.

The one odd bit of data in the chart is AOL's 14.5% increase in market share in the last year. It now has 4.3% of the market. There's nothing about AOL search that's particularly compelling, so it's a surprise it's increased its market share. We'll have to see if that holds up in the coming months.
