It seems to me that Google is releasing a service a day. Is it because the company has been around long enough that the beta products are making their way to the web? Or is because the faltering economy that includes high tech has spurred even the Google geeks to actually do something with their 20% projects instead of spending their time eating the free food and drinking the free drinks?
In any case, here's the rundown on the most recent services.
Latitude. Google knows where you are and you can either let everyone else know where you are, let a few people know or keep your mouth shut. If this had been a government project I don't think it would have ever made it past the privacy hearings. But there it is and the Ayn Randers will say the free market will decide if it is good, bad or ugly.
Multi-pane gmail views. This one might actually prompt you to start using gmail tags. You can easily build multiple views of your life as seen via gmail. It might serve to remind you how much of your life transpires via gmail and might make you pause to wonder what happens if the service conks out for a bit and you haven't used yet another feature
Off line gmail Even when you are not connected to Google, you are part of Google.Â
And finally, today The New York Times is reporting that Google is partnering with utilities and appliance manufacturers to create a PowerMeter technology. The idea is that now your house or businesses power consumption will be able to be viewed and managed via Google. When you get tired emailing, GoogleTalking and Latitude tracking your friends, you can now spend your idle moments talking to your appliances. It is one big Googleized world.Â
