Apple versus Google

Google updates Contacts search and Offline Mail options

As always, Google is adding important updates to our Google Apps. Today's in particular are pretty cool and a big help in productivity...

The first update is to Contacts, the most lacking (IMHO) but also the most rapidly evolving of Google's Apps. Google now allows you to search all of the fields of your contacts rather than just the name and email field. The obvious advantages: Now you can search by company, by phone number, or any snippit you can remember.

Bonus: If you've enabled contact sharing in your organization, you can search across the organization for contacts. Very nice.

Other contacts updates that have come down this week:

– You can now combine multiple contacts into a single entry
– The new 'All Contacts' group includes 'My Contacts' and other people you've corresponded with
– You can remove contacts from 'My Contacts', leaving them in 'All Contacts'

Offline Attachements:

Google also updated the Offline access in GMail for both Apps (soon) and Gmail to version 0.2. Instead of only being able to turn it off an on, you can now control what attachments get downloaded and which don't. This is a rolling update and not all accounts have this option (one of my accounts does and one doesn't).

Obvious advantages here include keeping your Offline Firefox or Chrome database size small and keeping your offline Gmail snappy.

Bonus: Today Gizmodo found out that people ask Google some pretty weird stuff.

I laughed, I cried, it was better than Cats.
