Government computing forecast? Cloudy!

Synergy can be described as occurring when the sum of the parts exceeds the whole. Cloud computing harnesses the Internet in a kind of "synergistic" way that allows users to tap into resources and use applications around the globe via the Internet. After reading "Study: U.S. gov't could save billions with cloud computing, open-source", I can see how open source and SaaS (software as a service) could help save the government money. With the economy in shambles, saving money is on everybody's mind.

I know first hand how expensive software can be. That’s why at work - with the help of a brilliant programmer from AT&T - we developed our own proprietary actuarial software years ago. Our efforts were rewarded with software specifically tailored to our needs and we were able to save money to boot. Let's face it, not only can governments stand to save some capital; companies and organizations the world over would enjoy doing so, as well. I really like the idea of cloud computing but there are still security issues that everybody needs to know about - the feds included. Last year Infoworld outlined some areas that should be explored before any entity considers taking off into cloud computing.
