Enterprise users of GreenPrint Technologies LLC's nifty utility that warns PC users about wasted pages before being printed reduce their page output by 17%. That's the claim by company founder Hayden Hamilton, who has polled the 23 Fortune 500 companies who have either purchased the software or are using it on a trial basis. Hamilton is so confident of the savings you'll get that he's now offering the software free for 1,000 or more end users, if you agree to split your paper and ink-cost savings with GreenPrint.
On January 28 the Portland, Ore.-based company is introducing a free version of the software called GreenPrint World for consumers. Hamilton says the difference between it and the current $35 home version is that it's a tad slower, offers no end-user support and includes advertising.
Currently the software only runs on Windows machines. However, the company wants to get a version out for Macintosh users in 2008. But Hamilton says, "It's tough finding good Mac programmers in India," where GreenPrint's software is developed. (Which begs the question: Will Windows developers whose jobs were outsourced to India switch platforms?)
