The Security Forest in the Corporate Trees

Happy New Year, for many but maybe not for 30Gig Zune Owners

My Zune locked up for the third time in the two years I've owned it.  No type of reset will restart it.  I thought it might be me, but I read an article that may explain more.

I did try to reset my computer's date and reconnect--nothing doing.  I think this is one day I'll need to wait for a dead battery and go from there.

I still favor the Zune over the iPod.  I really like to new changes to the library software.  Glitches like these remind me of Y2K hysteria.  That said, let me gently admit that I am recharging my iPod for a music emergency, possibly dragging out the box of old cassettes from the attic.  I don't mean to declare a Disco emergency unnecessarily, but you may want to do the same.

Around Noon tomorrow they should begin to work again, the trouble was the internal clock still registering the leap year. Let it drain it's energy and start it up around noon tomorrow and all your trouble will be gone =)

broken zunes

Microsoft stated that this is a problem with the leap year fouling the internal clock. It ?should? resolve itself as the internal clock hits GMT Noon. From there,

1. Recharge it
2. Fire it up (while crossing both toes and fingers) and
3. Resync & possibly rebuild it.

This is unfortunate that it happened. I think it illustrates a key Info Security principle: system time is everything and can be exploitable towards all kinds of purposes.

I was on my way home from

I was on my way home from work last night and mine completely froze at the start up screen as well. This is getting a bit ridiculous! Any way to fix it?

My two Zunes are at 2.3 (1145) update, they're OK.

I bought two because they were cheap, $90 each on amazon at one time.
At 8am PST today, after hearing the news, I turned on one of my two Zunes. While playing a song, it reset itself then came back with the main menu and worked fine since. Hours later, I turned on the second Zune, it's playing fine. Some other news article mentioned the latest firmware update was 3.0, mines are at 2.3
They suspected DRM counter overwriting the functional code.

Crap

I have the same problem and so does my friend who also has a 30Gb Zune. Mine actually restarted and froze last night I unplugged the batter and re-plugged it in (not some thing you want to do if you think you will break or mess up your zune.). It worked fine for a few minutes till I tried syncing it with the computer, now it just is stuck at the frozen screen again. I let the battery die last night, and when I plugged it in this morning it just rebooted and froze again. I hope they get this fixed. It's almost fishy that Zunes everywhere are dying, even ones without the updated software...

dude this is total crap! i

dude this is total crap! i want a refund or something. this is just stupid!

Mine as well

Mine locked up today on the train to work. Anyone know WTF is going on? Do I have a brick?

I took my 30gig Zune to the

I took my 30gig Zune to the gym and it looked up on the Zune start up screen. No restart will work. I guess I to will wait for it die to see if it is truly dead.

You're not the only one to

You're not the only one to experience this. A friend of mine has the 30 gig as well, and it happened to her too. Apparently it's happening to almost all 30 gig owners.

I don't believe that it is

I don't believe that it is the zune 3.0 update that is doing this because i too have a 30gb. zune and it froze last night as well and i don't have the latest update applied to mine yet. does anyone know what is happening here?
