Seeing Through Windows

Here's why IE8 crashes

As I wrote about in my previous blog, IE8 hosed my system shortly after I installed it. I've got it up and running again, and found out the source of the crash. Read on for details.

When I first installed IE8, my system crashed when I tried to check out the new WebSlice feature. I clicked to subscribe to one, then opened up the sidebar, and that's when IE8 crashed. Re-starting it didn't work, and restarting my PC didn't work. Each time, it crashed. I used System Restore, and then even IE7 wouldn't work.

However, I managed to get IE8 working again by re-installing. And then, brave soul that I am, I clicked the Favorites icon, to open the sidebar...and you can guess what happened. IE8 crashed. So that seems to be the culprit. This time around, though, when I re-start IE8, it works.

If you're testing out IE8, let me know your experiences. Do you crash when you try to use the sidebar as well?

Wndows 7 and IE8 problem

I have windows 7 and IE8 on my pc. Sometmes, when I try to close a webpage, the center block of the webpage will not close. I have to restart my pc to get rid of it. Any ideas on how to fix it?

What is sad...

Is that this article is nearly two years old, yet IE8 still crashes often.

There is NO excuse for this.

What's most frustrating is

What's most frustrating is that there is no perfect web browser for Windows. IE8 is slow and crashes often, but uses less memory. Firefox is fast but is a MASSIVE memory hog (frequently using up almost 1GB (yes, 1GB) of available RAM). And my favorite/most used plug-ins aren't available for Google Chrome or Safari, so I can't use those. Why is it so hard to just get it right???

Frustrated.

The IE8 Nightmare

I bought my new laptop last year with Vista and IE7 installed. I of course was not to happy with Vista as XP was far more stable, for that matter windows 7 in Beta is more stable, but I had no complaints with IE 7, (at first) Then came the updates and along with IE8 upgrade. Soon the problems began, extreemly slow to boot up, slow to open web pages and some freezing. Soon this became a way of life, with multiple tabs opened up IE consistantly froze and crashed, at at the very least the CPU would max out at 100% and stay there for some time making my computer unoperatable. I went on a quest to find the problem, I did all virus, malware, adware scans available online and downloads, I disabled various add-ons and plug-ins, I ran IE with no add-on or plug ins enabled, I ran a register clean and maintenance twice. I deleted and reinstalled, spywares, virus proctections and IE8 itself. Still to no avail, IE still pegged my CPU at 100% ( note: the OS by itself does not do this)and froze and crashed my computer. Finally after various researches and thread readings, I uninstalled IE8, and Reset IE7 back to its factory default settings, (theres a microsoft website that does this for you) Then I begand test driving Chrome, Firefox, and Opera, My findings are this.. All three are excellent Browsers, But when I opened my music favorites folder that has 67 links to youtube and not only did Opera open all 67 links in Tabs, but it then proceeded TO PLAY THEN ALL AT THE SAME TIME!, Internet Explorer in any version would have blown up my computer trying this. Alas my friends the problem is not with our machines but with IE and Microsoft putting out such shoddy programs that require numerious updates to fix the holes they leave in them. My advice, dish IE altogether and find a new browser that suits you, it will make all the difference, and you be glad you did, I am..
sincerely, DIVORCED FROM IE

IE8 and XP crashes

Hello all, I feel your pain.
Reinstalled my second hard drive in the last 6 months and the OS and the 100's of updates to Windows. This of course comes with the lovely IE8 that eats my hard drive and crashes on XP almost on a timer. This takes hours to accomplish and this is the 3rd time for installing OS in last 6 months.

I am ready to go over to Apple since I've heard so many great things from it's customers.

I would rather pay a little more for something that will work and allow me to get on with my day.

IE and MS products

I agree with you all and I feel sorry for you.In fact I've got my part of the burden too, I was custom to the fact it crashes but since I've updated to IE8, things went worst. Not only does it crash, but it also had impacts on my Vista performance, a pity I tell you, my OS went sluggish, I couldn't understand for I was using a QUADcore well customised, I guess Microsoft experience difficulties with programming, fortunately I was able to repair my registries, and so I was able to undo the critical mistake, then I consider moving to Chrome browser since I was already using its Google search engine instead of msn and others, it's a way faster and better, I moved all my favorites links, customise the Chrome and now it's a perfect substitute, well I mean it's also a solution. I've also acknowledged that IE8 has raised a big problem when booting the OS on laptop using Windows OS,this problem presents itself with my cousin's laptop but I was able to salvage his's OS by system Restore, though I would advise you to care keeping a decent backup if you persist using IE
A solution
IF you don't know how to deal with registries
download Registry Mechanic and installl it then
run your laptop/pc in Safe Mode with networking then
run the scan and repair registries first then reinstall your IE when booting normally

IE8 crap, running Safari

I too have experienced many problems with the release of IE8. For my money, it's a real piece of crap that should be confined to MS employees. Maybe if they complain, something will be done.

I've recently installed Safari from Apple. I'll tell you that I surfed a whole day using Safari and not one crash. What does that tell you about Apple products vs. MS products? I've decided that my next machine purchase will be a MAC. They seem stable and not creating the nightmares of Vista and IE8. I'm so sick of my machine freezing when I open a new tab or window, I have reduced the time I spend using it. In my view, MS doesn't want to stay in business from the poor quality of products (IE8) they are now offering. (I've dumped my MS stock and purchased Apple. I'm a happy camper with the returns.)

Since the developers of IE8 have turned a deaf/dumb ear to it's users, I'm turning those same things towards MS. They can't answer the question of why, can't give you a fix and just load up your HD with BS updates that eat your hard drive alive. Maybe it's time users abandon MS and see how long they survive. Linux looks good and seems to be stable. Apples OS seems to be the leader for home users. So Mr. Gates, until you and your developers can fix the multitude of problems you software creates, consider me gone. And besides, OpenOffice seems to be a much better product than MS has produced since Windows applications first hit the market.

Fix it or get out of the business. I'm no longer a supporter and will be moving to your competition as soon as I can rid myself of the volumes of updates, which creates new problems, and your companies lack of support/knowledge in the problems presented by MS.

Syonara. I will have less headaches on a MAC than I have with your jacked up OS and browsers.

Babu Gene

I see lots of MAC users here :-)

I know I know... I get that all the time at work. Being the PC Tech surrounded by MAC graphic designers I hear all the time that a MAC is better than a PC. If you are reading this and you are a MAC trying to bash on the PC enthusiasts, then please more on to another article. If you have something constructive to say, then say it.

OK so IE8 is having a few issues. This is a new browser and I bet the bugs are not ironned out yet. This is the place where we can all get together and create some type of an error report and give it to Microsoft.

Let's work together to resolve it.

Tried to switch to Safari but incompatible !!??

Hi,
I tried switching to Safari because Firefox won't work with Windows 7, and Chrome isn't compatible with most of the sites I visit, IE 8 sucks, ...
I have a new Acer that came with Vista and a free upgrade to Windows 7 the IE 8 is built in and if I turn it off I can't use my Quickbooks, so I have to leave it on which is causing problems, I can't find a link to try to reinstall or go back to IE 7. Should I go back to Vista? How do I do it?? I have a lot of work to get done! I am a bookkeeper and have sales tax returns due in just a few days now! Can someone HELP??

What are you talking about?

??? Firefox DOES work with Windows 7. I've been running Firefox 3 since Windows 7 BETA (all beta builds before final release). Moving to Vista is going to make your life worse, I PROMISE YOU. What you need to do is get your computer cleaned. By that I mean take it to a professional and have them do a CLEAN install of Windows 7 ***MINUS*** the uncessesary crapware/junk that Acer adds to their PCs out the box. That's causing your problems. If you want a stable, reliable computer that you bought from the store, always reformat, clean install Windows and ONLY the apps you specifically use. You'll be amazed at how fast and stable it'll be.
