High tech attacks need high tech response

The recent attacks in Mumbai were carried out by assailants using high tech methods. It’s just another way in which technology can be used not only for good but for evil as well. According to a washingtonpost.com article, "Gunmen Used Technology as A Tactical Tool", not only did the attackers use blackberries, multiple cellphones with switchable SIM cards, and Google Earth maps, but they made use of GPS equipment to navigate waterways and pinpoint their targets.

As events were unfolding, news crews were front and center, reporting on the action.  They were airing footage of the Black Cat commandos (part of India’s special forces unit) readying to take the attackers by surprise. That is, until coverage was cut off when the news stations decided/realized their broadcasts could be monitored by the attackers too and therefore jeopardize government actions. According to the article, eyewitnesses did in fact report that the assailants had televisions on and were tuned to the live broadcasts.

In the wake of these events, India has been criticized for not providing their forces with the most up-to-date equipment; their National Security Guard doesn’t have it’s own aircraft and the Black Cats have little access to important tools like night-vision goggles or thermal imaging gear. The good news is that with all the media attention, not only India but also other nations will certainly ramp up their security capabilities. Sadly, it’s usually only in the aftermath that things get done; hindsight is twenty-twenty.

What People Are Saying

Terrorists

The only way to win the war against terrorism is to play by the terrorists rule, none.

Terrorists taken dead or alive should be buried in pig dug. Do not pass go. Do not collect 72 virgans in paradise.

When Provinical Governor of the Phillippanes, Gen. Pussin exerecuted terrorists with bullets dipped in pigs blood and than would dump terrorists remains in a pit filled with pig carcuses and blood. It worked.
