IE falls behind Firefox, Chrome in browser survey

GigaOM reports that a new survey of the most used applications on Windows puts Firefox at the top, followed by Google's Chrome browser. Internet Explorer trailed at #3. And among the youngest users, IM did even worse.

The survey, by Wakoopa, includes the most used applications on Windows, Mac and the Web. It is based on the activity of 75,000 participating users.

Firefox also came out on top among Mac users. On the Web, Facebook was #1, but Google  took four of the top 10 slots. Gmail was #2. The survey also shows that younger users prefer Firefox over IE by a larger margin.

What People Are Saying

Excludes GNU/Linux

They do not track GNU/Linux at all so the story is even worse for M$ than stated. Obviously IE is rarely used with GNU/Linux. The current running stats on the site do not agree with the published numbers in TFA. Perhaps the fans of M$ have piled on.

IE was added to that other OS in 1995 to increase lock-in. This evidence shows the lock-in is failing and the monopoly is ill.

Not surprised

With each new version IE gets worse and worse... slower and more complicated. I don't know why anyone would use it. Firefox is so much faster and easier to use and configure (once you understand the about:config options).

I haven't even tried Chrome. Why would I?

"I haven't even tried

"I haven't even tried Chrome. Why would I?"

Simple, for the same reason as you started to try Firefox.

It came pre-installed...

Firefox was already installed on my computer. I had no other browser. And, "If it works, don't fix it". So, again, why would I try Chrome? Firefox does it all for me and does it well.

then why complain about

then why complain about internet explorer?

if that was your only browser, you'd be saying "why would i try firefox?"

Significant

I've never heard of Wakoopa, but as an IT professional, I don't use IE or Outlook. I've used Netscape, then Firefox and Thunderbird nearly exclusively for years. That habit alone has protected me from 90% of the malware out there. And when someone asks me "How can I reduce the risk of getting infected?" I tell them that.

Get Real - Survey Obviously Wrong

Get Real.

Among other things, Net Applications puts Chrome's market share at a whopping 1.23%.

There is no way in the world that Chrome is more used than IE.

Net Applications puts Firefox's share at a respectable 22.05%, and IE at 66.82%.

You are right there is

You are right there is nothing true in this survey besides I never go for any survey, they are often wrong and biased.

It is correct

The wakoopa users are the power users/early adopters, that is the user base where this survey was done.

Statistically significant?

The sample is 100% of the 75,000 users participating in the Wakoopa social networking site. I agree that it cannot be used as a broader measure of browser use.

I look at the tabulations as more of a focus group. And it may say something about who has the greatest mindshare with the IT leaders that everyone else follows. If I were Microsoft I would think this result would raise a red flag and possibly warrant further study.
