Seeing Through Windows

"I'm a PC" ad: Finally, Microsoft gets it

Microsoft unveiled the next phase of its ad campaign yesterday, minus Jerry Seinfeld --- and this time around, the ads work.

The new ad starts off with a Microsoft employee who's a dead ringer for the PC guy in Apple's ads, saying into the camera: "I'm a PC, and I've been made into a stereotype."

From there, it shows a variety of different people briefly saying why they're "a PC." Included are celebrities such as actress Eva Longoria and her husband basketball player Tony Parker, as well as other people including a graffiti artist, a commercial fisherman, and a scuba driver inside a shark cage.

The point is simple --- you can use a PC for a wide range of tasks. And there's an important subliminal point as well: none of those being portrayed display the kind of smarmy hipness that the Apple guy does in the Apple ads.

What People Are Saying

Microsoft Owns crapple thanks to their bailout..

darn we only have 10%, err 21% of the market share.....does anyone else? Dell... Gateway...........(crickets chirping).

I'm a PC and I make lame

I'm a PC and I make lame ads. Lord, all that money and that is the best they can come up with? No style, no wit, just lame.

Thank you Bill Gates and Microsoft !

Isn't anyone grateful for Microsoft rescuing Apple from bankruptcy. Don't be a hypocrite my Mac brothers and sisters.

Saved Apple?

"Isn't anyone grateful for Microsoft rescuing Apple from bankruptcy. Don't be a hypocrite my Mac brothers and sisters."

More FUD. The money Microsoft "gave" Apple was not to save them, it was to settle a lawsuit brought by Apple against Microsoft. Please get the facts right, and stop trying to make the megalithic evil empire into something it never has been: compassionate.

Megalithic Evil Empire ? LOL

Drackmere, I'm very sorry, you may need some psychiatric help. Megalithic evil empire may be just a little bit extreme.
At the August 1997 Mac-World Expo, Apple co-founder Steve Jobs stunned the masses by accepting a $150 million bailout from Microsoft. Apple executives claimed it was the only way to save the beleaguered company. the company was reporting $700 million in after-tax losses and preparing to cut some 1,000 jobs. With Apple controlling a mere 5.3 percent of the computer market at that time, it seemed as though the PC vs. Mac debate would finally come to an end.
As for not being compassionate, Bill Gates is one of the biggest philanthropist in the world. Respectfully, WRB

Bailout???????? Yeah - go

Bailout????????
Yeah - go ahead and rewrite history - like "Excel was developed on PeeCees and ported to Macs". Remember Multiplan??? Apple was critical to the successful(?) development of Windows and collaborated on many projects in the early days. Seems like your selective memory on this matter has failed you. MS purchased 150Mill of _non-voting_ right stocks as a settlement for ripoffs from Windoze3.1 to 95. Now with Vista they continue to ripoff Apple's engineering and interface design (but very badly).

I'm sick of this misunderstanding, particularly when I hear people say "geez didn't Microsoft buy Apple a few years ago?" 150 mill wouldn't have even been a small downpayment and Apple had huge cash reserves at the time. Get your history sorted before you sprout dopey, uninformed crap like this!

Calm Down Its Alright !

Its alright Splat don't get yourself all worked up, its not good for your blood pressure. Who really cares that Microsoft does a lot more business than Apple. You really do need to get a life and get out more, you'll feel better. Really, calm down its no big deal. Try a Windows PC it not really that painful, I like both.

Granny knows how to suck eggs

Thanks for the helpful advice Keith. For what it is worth in this obviously PeeCee centric blog I
a. Do have a life
b. Run a server farm with a mix of Macs and PeeCees.
My experience is that I have Macs that are over 10 years old still doing productive work whereas I have replaced ALL of the PeeCees over the same period because they couldn't handle the upgrades or just burnt their brains out.

I didn't join this thread because I want to flame PeeCees or their devotees. I wanted to correct a oft-held myth that MS owns Apple. And I agree with you that owning a PeeCee is less painful than it used to be. And then along comes Vista...

I'm NOT a Mac!

i USE a mac - i always saw the mac commercials as apple illustrating the computers as personalities not the people that use them. and that's what the new PC commercials got wrong.

people aren't PCs and no matter how cool and diversified these people are, the PC itself is not.

same for apple users... no matter how stupid, fat, uncool, sheep or nerdy we are, the Macs themselves are still Sleek and awesome.

both audiences for Mac and PC are pretty much the same, the computers on the other hand are worlds apart and that's what the mac commercials exemplify as oppose to microsoft pointing the obvious that people are all different.
