So much for the Paperwork Reduction Act!

In addition to my IT role, I'm a Pension Consultant by trade. I've been involved in retirement planning since I was 19 years old. Over the past two plus decades, I've seen a lot of change in the financial industry. The calculations that used to take me eons to complete on my antediluvian Texas Instruments calculator when I was a teen are now accomplished in nanoseconds on my Dual Core Pentium computer.
However, contrary to what you’d expect and despite all the changes I've seen in technology, the amount of paperwork my office turns out is still remarkable. While our industry (like so many others) has reduced the amount of paperwork we generate as outlined in the paperwork reduction act, we're still putting out what seems like a ton of paperwork each year. I like being able to look up account balances and transactions online and performing electronic transactions, however, lots of our clients (like many consumers in other sectors) still prefer the old-school paper reports we send out. This makes me wonder if we'll ever be a true paperless society? Maybe it’ll just be an inevitable part of progress. Only time will tell. Eventually.
