The Security Sector

Insecure even though PCs are secured

I know lots of folks who don't really trust the Internet - for a variety of reasons. But that doesn't stop them from surfing. Not only do users here in the U.S. feel this way, either. This year's Online Wellbeing Survey by F-Secure revealed that even users from France, Germany and the UK don't feel that their PCs and their email are safe from malware. And most of these are people who've installed PC security software. No matter - almost three quarters of them (73%) understand that even those running up-to-date antivirus can still get infected.

The users from Germany were most well-informed though; even though they were most leery of e-commerce and online banking, they understood best of all respondents how often antivirus definitions need to be updated. I thinks everyone should take not of that - after all, if your antivirus is not up-to-date, you may as well not have it!

I have to say, it boils down to what the chief research officer at F-Secure, Mikko Hyppönen said, "It is worrying to see that so many consumers believe their antivirus definitions are up to date while not understanding how frequently they need to be updated." Let's remember that lesson.
