iPhone, iTouch: Soldiers in the browser wars

Apple Inc. has boosted its share of the Internet browser market thanks to the Web-browsing capabilities of the iPhone and iTouch, according to research by StatCounter, which counts Web visitors on a network of 2 million sites.

The StatCounter research found that the iPhone is the No. 1 mobile browser in U.S., and No. 2 globally (behind Nokia). This is consistent with other research cited by blogging colleague Seth Weintraub: Canalys figures in, iPhone a clear winner in North America.

Here's the StatCounter conclusion:

Globally: iPhone/iTouch more than doubled its share of the total browser market, from 0.03% in December 2007 to 0.08% in March 2008.

U.S.: iPhone/iTouch increased its share of the total U.S. browser market from 0.14% in December 2007 to 0.23% in March 2008.

"The key message is that iPhone is more than living up to its claims of being a user-friendly Internet browser, unlike many other cell phones," says Aodhan Cullen, founder and CEO of StatCounter in Dublin, Ireland.

Cullen noted that the iPhone's browser market share peaked in the U.S. on Christmas Day at 0.07%, presumably because people were trying out their new Christmas present.

Methodology: A sample of 372 million page views globally from December 2007 through March 2008, including 71 million U.S. page views.
