iPod Touch camera: how good will it be?

I've already accepted that the next iPod touch would have a camera. A few months ago, HardMac and iLounge both stated that new iPod touches and iPod Nanos would include cameras with iLounge even doing some mockups. Since then, I've discovered Apple job postings mentioning iPod cameras (in the title!) as well as "embedded video engineers".

Interestingly, today some more evidence piled up on the iPod camera heap. A few iPod case manufacturers have produced new iPod cases with holes for cameras.

This would seem to indicate that an iPod camera is fairly certain. It even has Forbes echoing "Apple is killing the camera" story - before the iPod camera is even announced.

But the interesting thing/show stopper for me is: What quality of camera will this be? If it is similar to the iPhone 3GS's 3 megapixel camera, I think it will be popular...but it isn't going to kill the point and click. The lenses and CCDs are much better on a $100 Canon camera and frankly, I want better pictures than the iPhone 3GS can deliver.

There have been some 5 Megapixel camera rumors around as well. If Apple can put a decent lens and some good hardware on the device, they just might upset the camera industry. Otherwise, they'll probably take a some marketshare away from the Flip and Xacti lines but leave the higher end point-and-shoots alone.

In other news, Apple is said to be putting a micro projector in some of its new products, iPhones and iPod touches seem like an interesting target for this type of device.

What People Are Saying

Actually

I could care less about a camera in the next gen iPod Touch. What I want is GPS.

Can someone tell me what's up with these CAPTCHAs? I keep trying to copy and paste them into the test box, but wind up having to manually enter them. Maybe copy and paste could be a feature added in the future, even the iPhone has it now.

The new iPhone 3G S and the Apple bait

I think personally that apple is doing a major marketing manouver. They could do much better on the ipods and iPhones.

It isn't just reasonable that you can't view other type of video format on the ipod, even though it would decrease it's performance. The incorporation of a camera on an ipod touch 2nd Gen, would be necessary for people who already had bought a 32 Gb ipod touch of 2nd Gen to buy another device? This is just financial mambo jambo to get the money out of consumers pockets. Everyone should be able to just trade their own device plus a few extra $$ to get an upgrade on their device. After all the hardware can be use to the new devices and they just need to make a few tweaks, because they don't make considerable upgrades at all.

And they would be reducing the electronic scrap all over the world. It would be of an enourmous advantage in production costs and @ the same time the consumers would be more pleased with the overall performance of Apple.

The release of the new iPhone 3g S it was just simply a huge scam, let's compare the "super" features that this new device offers:

- More Battery time(good)
- A 3 Mp camera (any other cell phone with 3G has better than that)
- MMS feature (omg i am saliving with the sight of that, jesus...that is just like having a car with everything on it and saying, "we are sorry but you cannot have radio")
- 16Gb and 32 Gb version (this is stupid isn't it? The ipod touch 2nd Gen already had that -_-)
- 2x Faster loading times (Isn't this related to the new 3.0 software ?)
- voice activated calls (3.0 software again)
- video recording feature (related to the fact that you now have a better camera, if you can call that a better camera at all in comparison to other cell phones)

And all of this for the base price of a regular iphone $499 plus $100 in the 16Gb version and $200 in the 32 Gb version. I think any other cell phone in hardware can top that and they don't even cost as much.

Yeah, great congratulations,

Yeah, great congratulations, welcome to the world of "Feature-Rollout-Schedule" and "Planned-Obsolescence"

Its called business. Glad you decided to join us. Now grow up.

What?!?

What you and every other commenter out there who writes this same complaining comment about how Apple is late with this feature and that feature does get is that Apple only adds a feature when it works really well, and people (over 50%) will actually use it. Sure, I had a GSM phone in Europe back in 2001 that did MMS. Did I use it? NO. Why? Because it sucked. That phone had IM and I never used it.

Your idea for swapping hardware is a joke right? Haha. Obviously you've never taken an iPod or iPhone apart. You think they are minor upgrades and you can just magically add a camera (are they going to cut out the metal backing to put the camera in your old iPod?) or rip out the soldered RAM and put new ram in for you? You also don't understand labor costs either. The time it would take to perform a professional upgrade would cost more in labor than it would cost just to buy a new unit.

The iPhone 3GS camera is actually quite good because of the software (auto focus, white balance, etc.) The video is very good. The telling factor here isn't that the quality is a higher megapixel but they fact that Youtube's mobile uploads increased 400% within a few days after the release of the iPhone 3GS. It is a phone. It has a camera. It doesn't shoot HD (yet) and I don't expect it too. It would be bulky and uncomfortable (like the G1, which also has a crappy camera) and I wouldn't use it. The problem with cameras with phones isn't really the camera, it is the lens. You are restricted by size so you just can't compare the two. Sure technology has shrunken and now the iPhone 3GS has a decent camera but it took two years to happen. Maybe in another two years they'll have something worth swapping out to make the camera even better.

Your analysis of the 3GS features is really uniformed. You may care about MMS but I know a lot of people who don't really care who bought iPhones anyway (25 million or so). The iPhone has more components (cellular radios) so it really only has room for one memory chip (16 x 1). The iPod can actually fit two memory chips hence the double capacity (16 x 2).

The iPhone 3GS has a new chipset and a new processor (two years newer). It is much more effecient in both power consumption as well as processing power. The speed boost is almost entirely because of the processor and increased RAM (512 vs 256).

The new iPhone also has hardware decoding features that make Voice Control and Video recording and editing possible and USABLE on a mobile device without killing the battery in 30 minutes.

If you are just comparing "hardware features" then sure the iPhone doesn't have the highest end specs. But guess what? They aren't trying to have the bleeding cutting edge technology because they are a business designed to make money and increase the investment for their shareholders. They do that by creating value for customers and they balance profits and value. Since they are pretty much the fastest growing mobile device manufacturer in the world I'd say they are doing a pretty good job.

You should take a business class or two before you make more comments. Just to avoid further embarrassment.

apple iphone argument
