Seeing Through Windows

Is Ballmer the crazy aunt in the attic?

Steve Ballmer must take elocution lessons from President Bush: Microsoft today backed away from Ballmer's comments that Microsoft would consider extending the life of XP if customers asked for it. I guess it's just one more example of Ballmer suffering from foot-in-mouth disease.

As I wrote previously in my blog, Ballmer told a news conference in Belgium that Microsoft would extend XP's life if enough customers demanded it.

"XP will hit an end-of-life," Reuters quotes him as saying. "We have announced one. If customer feedback varies we can always wake up smarter."

Microsoft, though, today backed away from Ballmer's statement. James Niccolai of the IDG News Service quotes a spokesperson for Microsoft as saying there is no plan for extending XP's life.

The spokesperson, reading from a prepared Microsoft statement, said:

Our plan for Windows XP availability is unchanged. We're confident that's the right thing to do based on the feedback we've heard from our customers and partners.

In other words, ignore Ballmer. He's the crazy aunt we hide in the attic.

What People Are Saying

Loosing the leadership

I think this mess is showing the hard moment, when MS is definitively loosing the leadership in two ways.
First, because Google is consolidating itself like the most important company in the computer market.
Second, because Gates is retiring and MS will miss him.
So, they are confused.

Ballmer's comments and the

Ballmer's comments and the spokesperson's comments are consistent. Both state that Microsoft has a planned end of availability for XP, and no current plan to extend it. That is true and accurate.

Ballmer is reserving his right to change that plan in the future. That is not inconsistent with the quote from the spokesperson, who was addressing the current plan.

Is Preston Gralla the dog that needs to be put down?

I giggle at P.G. making these types of statements. Really Preston it's pure comedy from you right? You should try stand-up in Vegas, dood!

Can you imagine Steve Jobs making such mistake?

I can't imagine Steve Jobs making such mistake. The same situation we had with Bill Gates. Very unprofessionals. They think we are idiots, or what?

Ballmer == Dolt

I consider Windows and the Dallas Cowboys as basically the same: Their competitors are my friends. Gates' retirement put Ballmer in the driver's seat, and that's kind of like a drunk doing the driving. Ballmer is a heck of a salesman, but he is also the Peter Principle incarnate. That's good news for those of us who feel that Windows has badly squandered its position as industry leader.
