Seeing Through Windows

Is Microsoft's Seinfeld spot the worst TV ad ever?

I just saw Microsoft's much ballyhooed Jerry Seinfeld ad, and can say without equivocation it's one of the worst, most pointless ads in history. If this is Microsoft's response to the "I'm a Mac" ads, it should fold up its tent and tell the world to switch to Apple.

You can see the ad, below, via YouTube. The entire spot plays off a lame joke about Bill Gates buying cheap shoes at a cut-rate discount store. The ad isn't funny, has absolutely no point, and is about as boring a minute and a half as you'll ever spend.

Gates, as we all know, isn't a particularly scintillating personality. And here that blandness rubs off on Seinfeld. Making matters worse is Gates' uncanny resemblance to the PC Guy in the Mac ads, which is no coincidence, of course.

There's no humor in the ad, and no information as well. It has nothing to do with Windows, or even with computers, for that matter. If there's ever been a worse technology ad, I haven't seen it.

Thoughts about the Gates-Seinfeld ads

What People Are Saying

seinfeild gates ad

what is most ridiculous is that this is the first of an ad campaign costing 300 million

how the hell they manage to spend that amount of money you can have no idea

It appears that MS can do

It appears that MS can do nothing right. Its commercial is as crappy, pointless and annoying to experience as Vista.

love the Gates-Sinefield ads

Light humor - not in your face - a break from the norm. I wouldn't want a steady diet of these commercials but they did make me stop and watch for a minute or two. And they made me smile and "like" Microsoft a bit more.

Definitely worst ever

Complete failure

Maybe not all of what

Maybe not all of what Seinfeld and Gates talk about in the ad makes sense, but that's the point. If you see Bill Gates in a commercial and he's trying on shoes -- that's unusual. I liked the fact that they aren't directly trying to sell any products in these ads. It's supposed to make us react like, "Hey that's Bill Gates and there's Seinfeld. They're shoe shopping together? That's funny!" It's like a three panel Calvin and Hobbs strip. Maybe not everything made "funny" sense. But it was interesting. I liked it.

I'd like to see Bill Gates in other everyday moments that don't have anything to do with computers and Windows. I think that is interesting at the very least.

Come on people lighten up.

People wake up please

Really?! Is nobody getting it? The whole blogospehere is talking about this ad, yes in a expected (negative) manner but you can bet your *ss that's strategy.

The situation is that Microsoft just can't do anything good anymore these days and everybody is just aping each others opinion (saw the Mojave experiment?) which is just not fair, even considering the failures.

So in a situation where MS is already on the floor and everyone is kicking them. A expensive ad in wich they claim how great Vista is and that we should buy it, would be immediately axed by the biased blogosphere and that would be the end of it.
So no they didnt come out with something the public could (again) further bash on, they came out with something no one seems to actually get in the first place.

So now there is a whole blogosphere out there with sharpened pencils waiting to axe whatever comes out of the gates.. and guess what now they have the difficult job to axe something they don't get.
You see that al these anonymous loudmouths are trying to make sense of it and are desperately seeking an excuse, to link the ad to Vista, wich they actually cant... , try to criticize the agency, wich they actually cant.

The only thing we can do is talk about it... and at the same time come to a sad realization that there is simply nothing to pick on, ending up being confronted with our own negative mindset that bothers us in the first place, not Microsoft.

seinfeld & gates ad effective

Having watched the ad for the first time before reading the many reviews that trash it, I must say that most reviewers completely miss the point. The ad made me laugh (at the "end"), kept my attention (out of curiousity), kept me wondering when it would segue to Vista, and left me with some attention on it after it was over. As a lead in to an ad campaign, that makes it effective. And for the record, I do not own a Mac, still run XP on all my business and home machines and always found Seinfeld self indulgent and not all that funny. This ad lightens up and leads. Nuf said.

I loved it... I thought the

I loved it... I thought the humor and marketing message was brilliant. Apple has been using their same advertising theme for the past few years and it was the perfect time for Microsoft to step it up with an entertaining ad.

Its just a commercial, people

Why are we still talking about it?

Seriously, does anyone still watch commercials anyway?

Do you have any idea how

Do you have any idea how much money is spent each year on commercials?

Seriously, you take yourself way to seriously. You need to google the word "pretentious".
