The Security Sector

It happens to the best of us!

I have to say, I really enjoyed this Computerworld piece "Top 10 tech embarrassments you'll want to avoid" by Dan Tynan. I've had some of these embarrassing tech snafus happen to me. But one of the funniest and most unnerving was when I had my 15 minutes of fame and the computer locked up. Let me explain. About eight years ago, there used to be a local TV show called "Your Internet Show".

One of my accountant friends knew the show’s producer and mentioned that if I wanted to go on I could do a segment on how people could use the Internet to educate themselves about retirement planning (remember, in addition to IT, I also work as an actuarial consultant). Anyway, I was on the show (nervous as heck) and the cameras were rolling and I planned to click on a link and go to a specific government Web page. Of course, the computer froze for about 30 seconds. The little hourglass just spun and spun and I had to continue talking as if the page had loaded. I was horrified for the 30 or so seconds as my heart raced waiting for the page to pop up. Figures, I get my 15 minutes of TV fame and the machine freezes up.
