The Security Sector

It's a different world now...

Everywhere you look it's doom and gloom. This recession is now in its 15th month and there are signs that things will get worse before they get better. I'm old enough to remember the odd/even gas days when I was concerned that I would not be able to get gas to commute to college. I remember my father trading in his big V-8 powered gas-guzzling Chevy Malibu station wagon for a four cylinder compact car. But hard times have befallen us before and sooner or later we'll recover.

The thing that amuses me is the spate of predictions we’re hearing. So many experts have tried to predict when things will turn around and while some may be correct, others are likely to be wrong. As far as IT spending is concerned, our company has felt the economy’s effects and we've had to put IT spending on hold. This makes it tough for me, as I have to keep the antediluvian equipment held together with spit and glue that much longer. Lucky for me I spent a great deal of my nascent IT years on the most frugal of budgets. Sure I'm disappointed but when I look around it's better to have to deal with old equipment than no equipment.

What People Are Saying

Many are in this boat...

Held off on Vista...

Budgets tightened...

7 is vapourware...

GNU/Linux will run well on old equipment, old or new thin clients, and netbooks today.

Many IT departments will come up with creative ways to use GNU/Linux. They have had a year or two to think about it and a year or two more to act. If you want robust, responsive IT go with GNU/Linux. Convert the desktops you can to thin clients. Convert the apps that can run on the server to do that. Convert all the desktops you can to run GNU/Linux. Then your problems with antique software will be limited to a fraction of current seats. You can also consolidate some server apps at little cost and some immediate savings.
