Izea launches spam-a-friend program for Twitter

Izea wants to pay you to spam your friends on Twitter.

"Within the next few weeks, Izea plans to introduce another way to outreach to consumers — a 'Sponsored Tweets' platform for Twitter users to blast promotional messages to their followers," says the story in today's New York Times.

You get paid. Your followers get the ads.

What a great way to lose all of your followers.

That service is part of a broader trend that the story refers to as "the encroachment of commercialism into new-media formats." The trend includes giving free products to bloggers with the tacit understanding that they will only write something positive, and agreements with Twitterers and paid bloggers to mix in paid ads along with their regular content.
