Keep IP addresses under control

With the deployment of voice over IP, wireless networks, virtual machines and oodles of other ways IP addresses get handed out or later discontinued inside of an organization, you'd think there was no reasonable method to track all of them.

Not so, says Branko Miskov, director of product management for BlueCat Networks Inc. in Toronto. He claims the company's announcement this week of its Proteus 2.5 appliance targets exactly that problem. The 2.5 software update includes an IP reconciliation feature that uses BlueCat's network IP address discovery feature to compare existing addresses to those stored in Proteus. If it finds addresses in the database that are no longer active on the network, administrators can reclaim them for use by other devices.

On the other hand, Miskov says, if it locates previously unknown IP addresses on your network, the software can determine the rogue unit's MAC address and which physical port on a switch that it's using.  With this, you can find its physical location on the network, giving you an extra layer of security.

Among other enhancements, the new release will also add workflow processes to ensure adherence to policies for distributing IP addresses.

Proteus 2.5 will ship in June and start at $40,000.
