Kodak printer sellout: Are consumers voting for lower ink prices?

In yesterday's blog I lamented the fact that my local Staples no longer sells HP-compatible ink and toner cartridges, and that the branded products cost much more. HP's move to maximize profits by limiting consumer choice could play into the hands of Kodak, a new player in the ink jet printer market that's offering low-cost consumables as a way to compete against the entrenched players.

If you're mad as hell and don't want to pay high prices for ink anymore, you may be responsive to Kodak's new line of EasyShare printers. Kodak offers this bargain: you pay a bit more for the printer. In return, it will sell you the consumables for 50% less than those from HP and other established players (a 5-color cartridge is just $14.99; a black cartridge $9.99).

Kodak has turned the current business model on its head. While HP, Lexmark and others virtually give away the "razor" to sell you the blades, Kodak expects to make a margin on the hardware. In return it will provide cheaper ink. In the long run the total cost of ownership should pay off. Kodak says users who buy Kodak paper in quantity and use its consumables can print 4 x 6 photos for about 10 cents each - about 1/3 the cost of competing printers and about half the cost of prints at your local Target or Wal Mart.

When Kodak first announced the products last month, analysts commenting in a Wall Street Journal story were divided on its prospects (Kodak's Strategy For First Printer -- Cheaper Cartridges, available to WSJ online subscribers only). While some said Kodak's consumer-friendly move would shake up the industry, others said only those customers that print lots of color pictures were likely to buy Kodak's new products.

In a posting at The Utility Belt blog last month (Kodak printers target the heart of HP's profit), the author previewed the printers and came away impressed. His summary: "HP should worry."

It's too early to say for sure, but judging by the initial response, Kodak may have hit a nerve with buyers. The product line launched this month exclusively with Best Buy. A check of the Best Buy Web site this morning showed that Kodak's $149 low-end model, the EasyShare 5100 All-in-One Photo Printer/Copier/Scanner, was already sold out.

But will the new printer line from Kodak perform as well as products from HP and its established rivals? The 5100 supposedly creates color prints at 22 pages per minute and can generate a 4" x 6" photo print in 28 seconds. I haven't seen one yet. Perhaps readers could weigh in. Would you buy a Kodak?

UPDATE: October 8, 2009

In response to the number of negative comments posted here I've brought in another Kodak printer, the ESP-7, for testing. If you're interested in  the potential operating cost savings Kodak offers with its low-cost ink cartridges but are concerned about performance and reliability, read on.

What People Are Saying

I actually bought one of

I actually bought one of these systems from adaptive ink (the 720ml)and so far it's working great! I'm new to the continuous ink supply thing, and I've seen those Chinese systems - and they suck! (my buddy has one that leaks all over).

One thing I tested these guys on was if they gave any type of support as I had a few questions about setting it up. When I've called they've either answered or called me back later.

Now, let's just hope the penny-per-page is real. If it is, I'm going to save a TON of money!

Robert, What do you know

Robert,

What do you know about Continuous Ink Supply Systems? Is this a good solution to the high cost of ink jet printing? I Google for more information and there are a lot of continuous Ink supply solutions out there. Why is the Adaptive Ink CISS that Ken talks about on 10/14 better?

A True Fix for High Ink Prices for HP Printers

I found a new Continuous Ink Supply System from a company called Adaptive Ink (www.adaptiveink.com). Unlike the imported systems from China, their design utilized sealed large volume external tanks that preserve ink chemistry. I have one running on my K550 it is amazing - I've run a few thousand pages and I believe their claim of a penny a page ink cost. The most amazing thing about their design is you can actually purchase true large format HP cartridges and use them on your standard office printer (it's OEM ink at a much lower cost per volume and no worries about Adaptive Ink being in business forever). This is the best printing product I have ever seen. Highly recommended.

Kodak ESP 9

Well Steve, I have been fighting with Kodak for going on two months now. After having a knock down drag out with the India techs, I finally got a call from an American tech. Well long story short, he put me through the very same crap the Indians did, new software, new firmware, and as usual, it did not work. So now they want to send me my third refurbished printer and another print head, which would have been my fourth print head!!!! Which I declined. I told him I have had enough of this BS! The icing on the cake was today. I was supposed to have received an important fax, so I told the establishment that I had a machine that would accept faxes, the ESP 9. So I told the bank that was sending me a fax to give me 10 minutes to get the machine ready to receive there fax. Got everything set, and guess what? This piece of JUNK will not receive or send out faxes, that portion of the machine is bad also!I give up. I have let Kodak put me through enough HELL! $250.00 is not worth having this kind of stress. And that is exactly what Kodak wants, is for everyone that has purchased this junk to give up. They WIN! I quit. Buying a new Canon this weekend.

APOLOGY: Ref: Kodak Printer Posts...

TO all readers of this column,

Please accept my sincere apology. I'm angry and frustrated due to my very bad experience with my Kodak AiO 5300 printer.

After reading about all the other bad experiences others have had, too, I became even more angry and posted my comments, again, as replies to posts made by others.

Sorry 'bout that; won't happen again.

No worries

Don't worry about it, Steve. We all get frustrated sometimes.

If you need a good laugh, check out this diatribe from a disgruntled Windows user. It's a hilarious read for every frustrated Windows user who ever had a Mac fanatic kibitzing over his shoulder.

BTW, I'm bringing in an ESP 7 for testing. If you have things you'd like me to look at please let me know.

Kodak AiO 5300 Printer = JUNK!

I've been fighting with Kodak for a month, now. My barely-used AiO 5300 printer stopped working after I downloaded and updated the software and firmware. They've sent me two new printheads that did not fix the printer error that says the printhead is loose or missing.

WHY can't all of us who are having problems with this POS printer get relief through a class action lawsuit? I can't believe all the problems others are having, too!

Has ANYONE out there received any meaningful relief from Kodak? If so, please advise how you got your relief.

The printer is a useless POS! So is Kodak! I'll NEVER purchase another Kodak product again, as long as I live!

LET'S GET A CLASS ACTION GOING AGAINST KODAK FOR RIPPING US OFF!

kodak ESP9

I am in. I have only had my printer a few days and went to their site to download new drivers & have been waiting on tech support to get back to me for 2 of those days. somebody screwwed the pooch on this one. I can only print documents, and scan and make copies. I recieved not manual. When i make a copy of something with print and back the color of the other page bleeds through with no way to lighten the copy being made??? Can't scan a photo, or print a photo off their software. I keep getting a Paper edge not found error, and it prints crooked?? This is a bunch of junk and i haven't waited as long as you

I've got a 5300, it works!

I've got an Easy Share 5300 and it works fine. Wondering what the problems are all about?

Couple friends have them as well and no problems there either.

Ink is cheaper than anyone else by half, pictures good, final printed pictures about are about 10 cents for disposables.

No problems here.

Easyshare destruction video

I just posted about 5 minutes ago and meant to say that we are going to destroy our Easyshare Printer and place the video on YouTube. Should be fun and get the point across to alot of people.
