Seeing Through Windows

Lenovo: Linux has no future on netbooks

I've long said that Windows 7 may mean the death knell of Linux on netbooks, and here's more evidence: A top Lenovo analyst says that Windows 7 will dominate netbooks, and Linux will fade away.

Lenovo's Worldwide Competitive Analyst Matt Kohut spoke with Tech.Blorge about the future of netbooks, and what he had to say will likely make Linux fans fume. He touted Windows 7, particularly for its touch features. But when it came to Linux, he was not impressed. Here's what he had to say about Linux on netbooks:

...in order to keep the price points down, a lot of people thought that Linux would be the saviour of all of these netbooks.

You know, there were a lot of netbooks loaded with Linux, which saves $50 or $100 or whatever it happens to be, based on Microsoft's pricing and, again, from an industry standpoint, there were a lot of returns because people didn't know what to do with it.

Linux, even if you've got a great distribution and you can argue which one is better or not, still requires a lot more hands-on than somebody who is using Windows.

So, we've seen overwhelmingly people wanting to stay with Windows because it just makes more sense: you just take it out of the box and it's ready to go.

That's exactly what I've been saying for a while. Although Linux is generally easy to use these days, upgrading and installing software on it is no easy task. Linux's only future on netbooks is as a niche, and what Lenovo says is one more piece of evidence.

What People Are Saying

...a lot more hands-on than somebody who is using Windows

"Linux, even if you've got a great distribution and you can argue which one is better or not, still requires a lot more hands-on than somebody who is using Windows."

No it is not...well not in my experience.
No hardware issues...everything worked with no tweaking..even my ancient scanner!
No messing with driver discs.
No defrag.
No virus scanner to slow things down.
No constant re-boots.
No WGA.
No hefty price tag.

I am using Linux Mint 5 and 6 on all my family machines and have not had to do even a fraction of the fannying about that I had to do with Windows....and I have NEVER used the CLI...ever. The 'learning curve' issue often stated is so exaggerated...much easier than (IMO) moving to a Mac.

Linux does everything I need simply and reliably and I didn't have to pay a penny for it either.

I used to think Linux was a difficult 'geeky' OS....but i took the plunge and tried it a couple of years ago(after a particularly troublesome six-monthly reinstall of Windows/programmes and the servicepack/driver downloads).

windows vs. linux

Only a small faction of linux afficianados whine loudly over the
inferiority of windows and or tout the
benefits of linux over windows. They hardly represent linux users on the whole.
Linux and windows are in totally seperate
leagues and do not compare at all
really. Linux is and always has been for
the more advanced user, exclusively.Its
for those interested in and willing to
get under the hood and get their hands dirty. For what all unix/linux style OS's do they are second to none. Winblows is good enuf for its target consumer. Any perceived competition is
actually very very minimal in reality
and especially where the future is concerned. I wish more people would
get that straight...Were any linux distros to get too "intuitive"so to speak it is there that they would lose
their core supporters and developers
I'd wager.

linux and my mother

furthermore.... I hardly expect my mother well into
her 70's to become linux savvy.
windows has its place and unix/linux has its...
bigtime lord knows the internet itself is run by
unix and cant run without it. tootles

Sorry to hear about your mother

Sorry to hear about your mother, hardy. If she had a child who saw the picture a little more in focus, maybe her life would be better.

One of the most popular age segments who ASK me for MEPIS 8.0 (OK... they don't know the distro name, but they also didn't know which version of Windows they were using!) is the retired population.

They LOVE no virus worries.
They LOVE the simple Synaptic maintenance.
They LOVE how it just works.

In fact... I know of more than a handful of OVER-80 year old people using MEPIS 8.0 Linux and loving it.

They were not Windows savvy.
They are not Linux savvy.
They just like how it works.

So what's your problem?

My Mom uses Linux, why can't you?

My mother, well into her 70's and not a NASA tech enjoys using Linux very much than you.

No annoying MS subscription fee, no viruses, spyware, etc. A clear easy to use desktop, a word processor and a Good browser.

Linux gave her what she wanted, A fast stable and secure system that she doesn't have to mess with or worry about. Not what MS wanted , bloatware constant updates, subscription to AV software lots of $$$$$$$$$ for a SLOW insecure and bloated pile of @#$@.

If your of the OPINION that Vista is easier to use than Linux, it's doubtful that you have actually USED LINUX anytime in the past two years.

I work on and Use both. Linux passed MS in ease of use a few years ago. Sorry your arguments are VERY out of date.

Really?

does your Mom Adds and Removes software on her Linux distro (AKA:Manage software)???

Cause i bet a lot of moms (even grandmom's) can do that easily in "windoze".

Now, i bet that the truth is that everytime she wants a software installed, say aMSN for example, she needs to ask you (that knows how it works) to do it for her (you know the dependencies and so on)... and even if she uses tech as the OpenSuSE's "1-click install" (that solves dependencies problem) she'll need you to remove the application.

Oh and CNR seams kind of dead, Mint has VERY few applications available in his "easy to Add/remove tech" and PC-BSD suffers from the same problem in his PBI innovation... so... i guess we are kind of stuck in one of the most important details of an OS: the ability to add and remove 3rd party software ;)

It's truth, Windows isn't as good as Linux! It's a fact and i agree with that!
But Win is a LOT more easy to use, A Lot more user-friendly, has A LOT (and a mean REALLY A LOT!) more software - which means you can do A LOT MORE with it.

It has also a lot more virus... but if linux was used as much as win is it would had a lot more virus as well... not as many as Win, i'm sure, since it is a lot more secure, but it would for sure have more that it has (which is none - no matter what anti-virus companies say). Linux ain't perfect! In fact it is almost as "imperfect" as Windows... but in completely different areas.

Synaptic

Just ONE word: Synaptic!

Finally, a blogger with real intelligence

I commend you for stating the truth. Linux is nothing more than a toy for computer enthusiasts. Regular computer users do not want the hassle of having to tinker with an operating system made for tech geeks.

Linux will never amount to anything. The 1% market share it holds now will never see any substantial increases, at least not until a few distributions come together and design a usable operating system designed for human beings.

MS misses the boat

I guess all the ARM based netbooks that are being produced are just for us tech guys. Hmm I seem to recall a time when that was said about all PC's.

Like it or not the MAJORITY of netbooks run Linux as MS missed the boat.

No amount of MS funded studies or even giving XP away for $4.00 will allow them to catch up as Windows 7 runs like crap on a netbook and doesn't run at all on the faster cheaper and less power hungry ARM chips.

Take a look at this Touch screen baby!

RE:MS misses the boat

Linux is an awesome OS but lets not get carried away.

"Like it or not the MAJORITY of netbooks run Linux as MS missed the boat".

Dude, where did you get that from? I guess you got that information from these sites:
http://www.liliputing.com/2009/03/linux-loses-more-netbook-market-share.html

http://www.i4u.com/article23707.html

Before you start being paranoid, I dual boot and even use linux like 85% of the times. But lets face reality. Linux is not as user friendly as Windows period. Give your computer to your dad or grand dad and tell him...

"Do you need to install that your favourite program? Add a repository first by entering it in the /etc/apt/sources.list file, and then go to the command line and type sudo apt-get update and then sudo apt-get install yourfavouriteprogram".

That will be different from

"Do you need to install your favourite program? Google for the program, download the program and double click on it to install"

One thing people should know that, Microsoft taking a lion share of market share is not because it is superior to the other OS, it is because of their marketing and their OS is some what easier for people to deal with. Some people hate Microsoft because of Jealousy some hate them as an act of ethics.

Some people hate Google because they take up large percentage of market share when it comes to search.

I keep wondering why do people keep breaking their head over all these, do you get paid to keep these arguments on and on?
