Seeing Through Windows

Linux creator: "Microsoft hatred is a disease"

The Linux community tends to talk about Microsoft as if the company were the spawn of the devil, if not the devil itself. But Linux creator Linus Torvalds has a completely different perspective: He welcomes Microsoft's recent release of open source code, and berates those in the Linux community who focus on "exclusion and hatred" in their approach to technology.

Torvalds was recently interviewed by Linux Magazine about Microsoft's recent release of 20,000 lines of code to the Linux kernel. In the interview, he takes the opportunity to say that he is pleased that Microsoft released the code, and glad to see it make its way into the Linux kernel. Here's what he said about whether he would want to include the Microsoft code into the Linux kernel, and his criticism of those who constantly target Microsoft. (The added emphasis is mine):

"Oh, I'm a big believer in 'technology over politics'. I don't care who it comes from, as long as there are solid reasons for the code, and as long as we don't have to worry about licensing etc issues.

In fact, to some degree, I'd be more likely to include it because it's from a new member of the community rather than less (again, I'd like to point out that drivers are special. They don't impact other things, so they get merged much more easily than some core changes).

I may make jokes about Microsoft at times, but at the same time, I think the Microsoft hatred is a disease. I believe in open development, and that very much involves not just making the source open, but also not shutting other people and companies out.

There are 'extremists' in the free software world, but that's one major reason why I don’t call what I do 'free software' any more. I don't want to be associated with the people for whom it's about exclusion and hatred."

Torvald also defends Microsoft against those who argue that Microsoft's code release was only done for selfish reasons. In fact, he says, all open source code is written for selfish reasons, so Microsoft's motives are no different than anyone's in the open source community. Here's what he has to say. (Again, the emphasis is mine):

"I agree that it's driven by selfish reasons, but that’s how all open source code gets written! We all 'scratch our own itches'. It's why I started Linux, it's why I started git, and it’s why I am still involved. It's the reason for everybody to end up in open source, to some degree.

So complaining about the fact that Microsoft picked a selfish area to work on is just silly. Of course they picked an area that helps them. That’s the point of open source -- the ability to make the code better for your particular needs, whoever the 'your' in question happens to be.

Does anybody complain when hardware companies write drivers for the hardware they produce? No. That would be crazy. Does anybody complain when IBM funds all the POWER development, and works on enterprise features because they sell into the enterprise? No. That would be insane.

So the people who complain about Microsoft writing drivers for their own virtualization model should take a long look in the mirror and ask themselves why they are being so hypocritical."

Not much more needs to be said --- Torvalds is right on target.

What People Are Saying

Microsoft Hatred.........

I have used microsoft products day in and day out for 25 years. The bad out weighs the good to the degree where it is difficult not to hate microsoft. I have to deal with a new OS every few years which is expensive and time consuming. This doesn't include dealing with the service packs between the new releases. It never ends.

I go home in the evening, push the power button on my 6 year old Linux Box and it boots the same as it did when new. When I do an upgrade, I spend a few hours (at most) tweaking the config files and that is it. Basically, setting the configuration is the same as it was over 10 years ago with my first Linux Box. When something does go wrong, I know there is a good chance I can find a solution. With Linux, I have never had the feeling of hopelessness, I get with windows.

Stop the jihad

Microsoft is the wrong target for your wrath. The real enemies are Big Media and Big Telecom ...Comcast, Qwest, Charter, ATT, etc. They are doing their best to hold back network development and coverage so they can maximize profits without investing in infrastructure. Don't even get me started on DRM. So, get off Microsoft's back and go after the real evil.

Linux is a cancer (according to Ballmer)

"Linux is a cancer that attaches itself in an intellectual property sense to everything it touches." -- Ballmer, June 1, 2001

Wow, from reading some of

Wow, from reading some of these comments I think that his point is being proven rather well.

Nice article Preston

Not Surprised

Didn't take long for the implication that Preston is a "Microsoft shill" to arise. And we wonder why so many people have such a poor view of us Linux users?

I think you're wrong

I know the point and click admins at work don't like us UNIX/Linux admins because we make more. My old boss used to say, "You know the difference between a UNIX admin and a windows admin...about 50K per year".

AND Preston is Microsoft's boy. Most of his articles are written to either sniff microsoft's throne or bash linux, UNIX and mac. Just an observation.

Thanks for the tip!

So, it's NOT about the better technology. It's about the better paycheck!

Now I KNOW why, when I start my business, I'll make sure to never use a technology that will cost me $50K more per admin to use. I'll stick with Microsoft. Because I know that the technology is not so vastly different that it's worth so much more.

Paranoia

Paranoia seems to be a better fit for a term describing the free software movement's response to Microsoft's behavior. It's certainly not unfounded paranoia, as anyone who is witness to 20 years of carcasses and burned up companies that have dealt with Microsoft.

I don't hate Microsoft. I'm just extremely leery of any gifts they happen to proffer. Remember, we're dealing with a company that lives with paranoia. Vendor lock-in, FUD, aspersions, patents, Embrace, extend, extinguish, whatever - Microsoft is lobbing at Linux everything it can get it's hands on. That looks like paranoia to me.

Does that sound like a company that is confident they can overcome Linux? I don't think so. Submitting GPL software is, as another poster put it, the force of reality. Finally, Microsoft gets a taste of it's own medicine. They can either contribute to a great collection of software experience and knowledge in GPL software, or eventually be excluded for not playing nice.

That's all they have to do: play nice.
