Seeing Through Windows

Microsoft admits to SEC: We fear Linux, Ubuntu, and Red Hat

Microsoft has long pooh-poohed Linux as a desktop competitor. But a recent filing with the Security and Exchange Commission has the company admitting for the first time that Linux represents a significant threat to Windows.

TechFlash reports that in Microsoft's recent annual filing with the SEC, it listed for the first time Ubuntu's maker Canonical, and Linux distributor Red Hat as competitors to its Client division, which makes Windows. Previously, TechFlash says, Red Hat was listed but only as a competitor to its Business and Server & Tools divisions.

In its annual filing, Microsoft warns that Linux is a threat to Windows, particularly in emerging markets and for netbooks. It also warns that Apple is a threat, but it's said that before. The big news is the addition of Linux. Here's what the filing says:

Client faces strong competition from well-established companies with differing approaches to the PC market. Competing commercial software products, including variants of Unix, are supplied by competitors such as Apple, Canonical, and Red Hat. Apple takes an integrated approach to the PC experience and has made inroads in share, particularly in the U.S. and in the consumer segment. The Linux operating system, which is also derived from Unix and is available without payment under a General Public License, has gained some acceptance, especially in emerging markets, as competitive pressures lead OEMs to reduce costs and new, lower-price PC form-factors gain adoption. Partners such as Hewlett-Packard and Intel have been actively working with alternative Linux-based operating systems.

The filing goes on to add that Windows is also threatened by platforms and devices that might curtail demand for PCs. And it notes browser alternatives that could hurt it as well. Here's what the filing says:

The Windows operating system also faces competition from alternative platforms and new devices that may reduce consumer demand for traditional PCs. Competitors such as Apple, Google, Mozilla, and Opera Software Company offer software that competes with the Internet Explorer Web browsing capabilities of Windows products. User and usage volumes on mobile devices are increasing around the world relative to the PC. OEMs have been working to make the Google Android mobile operating system more compatible with small form-factor PCs or netbooks.

TechFlash notes that Google, Apple, Opera, and Android are new in this section; last year only Mozilla was listed.

The upshot to all this? Microsoft knows that it's in for a tough battle, and that its cash cow is endangered.

What People Are Saying

I AM the change I wish to see!

I AM the change that I wish to see in government, schools, homes, charities, and businesses!

Since 1997, I have taught others to wipe out proprietary software, and run safe, secure, GNU programs, on Linux and BSD kernels!

I start them out at age 3 with children's games on their own legacy PC machine.

Later, at about age 5, they can boot, and install, their own FREE Open Source Operating System and software.

The original goal I set was to "convert" one school or business each month, and one home user each week.

This goal has been exceeded so that I have helped one business/school convert each week, and home users have converted on average four per week!

I've distributed over 2500 Live CDroms of Linux, at shows, stores, and in malls, and given out over 2000 complete computers, to families who were disgusted with the Microsoft money pit.

Microsoft has finally noticed the change all of us are making! I am Linuxiac38@yahoo.com a Retired USAF Cryptographic and computer electronics technician.

FREE

now perhaps you should go and tell your banker you won't pay him your mortgage anymore because you have the right to a FREE house, and go to VONS and tell them you are taking your groceries for FREE, and finally go to Target and get some clothes FREE also. because it seems to me those are the basic human needs: home, food and clothing. After you convince them you can go preaching for your right for free software, otherwise your crusade for FREE software will look a little banal to me. (don't complain if they call you a communist on the process)

It's not about FREE giveaway

It's not about FREE giveaway but competition. Competition is the key, right? So, if you want to sell me things I can get for free, and I chose not to buy it, I am wrong for not buying your product. You have to make better product to put a price on it, right? Unfair competition is an excuse from someone who can't make a better product to extort from people.

FREE CHOICES

I believe Linuxiac38 like majority of us do not want things for FREE, we want CHOICES ,we are tired of spending money on an OS which always crashes,locks up, requires more memory,CPU,requires new programs when an upgrade is performed,runs sluggishly, regardless of how many programs are running. LINUX is not FREE per say, Linux is not as old as MICROSOFT yet due to the OPEN SOURCE COMMUNITY and CONTRIBUTIONS from everyone LINUX has in my view SURPASSED MICROSOFT.Can you imagine having only 1 cell phone provider on the planet,paying top dollar for service which is horrible, Thank god for ALTERNATIVES No? :}

FREE or Quality

mmmm, I am confused. Are talking about freedom of choice?, we always have freedom of choice from the beginning, as far as I can remember we always been able to buy a mac (or commodores, or amigas, etc). Freedom of choice is good, is what is makes capitalism work.

Are you talking about quality?, then I think we can do a stronger case for a mac computer, which is proprietary system.

and if he is not talking about FREE then why capitalize the word?.

FREE as in FREE SPEECH -not

FREE as in FREE SPEECH -not FREE BEER.

Linux-Ubuntu

The only thing that keeps me from using Linux full time is:

1. Approach Database with 28 years of records;

2. Quicken with 28 years of records;

Neither the database nor the Quicken application are supported by Linux.

Linux-Ubuntu

Try either "Crossover Office" or "Win4Lin". Either should support both of your applications under Ubuntu Linux.

Quicken/Linux

KDE has a replacement for Quicken in Linux. "Kmoney" Kmoney even supports QIF import/export.

We loaded today. Imported our quicken files and have dumped microsoft altogether now. Quicken was the last apron string to microsoft. We cut it quickly once we found out we could.

Didn't even know it was available until we checked the repositories.

Quicken not quite Intuit

Only 28 years of Quicken data? I have 37 years of Quicken data and have a system that can run a "comparable" Intuit product: Quicken for Mac.

The problem with changing Intuit products? Intuit has never gotten around to fixing a "bug" in their handling of stock splits, "spin-offs", and divestitures in Quicken. In addition, dividends and dividend re-investments are recorded differently.

The availability of a new version of Quicken for Mac that was purported to "fix" these problems has been delayed until sometime in 2010.

This does help anyone that has moved to a Linux O/S distribution or from Linux to OS X because we prefer a BSD-based environment.

Basically, we're stuck with running Windows in a virtual environment just to continue using Quicken.
