Microsoft's new anti-Apple ad: Hardware is cheap!

Microsoft kicked off a new Crispin Porter + Boguksy-produced Ad campaign today with an advertisement aimed at people struggling in a tough economy.  The ad doesn't really focus on Microsoft's Operating System software.  In fact, nowhere during the commercial does Vista even make an appearance.  I'll sum up the message for you:

"We allow our software to be installed on really cheap machines"

The hardware in question is the $699 at Best Buy HP - Pavilion Laptop.  The price goes up to $850 with Vista Pro.

It is the epitome of what people dislike about PCs.

- It runs Vista Home on a slower AMD mobile processor.  AMD makes some very good mobile processors, this one isn't at the top of the list.

From Best Buy's own review of this product:

Most of the systems in the Budget section of our Winter 2009 Retail Roundup (covering laptops from $600 to $899), have Intel's 2.0GHz Core 2 Duo T6400 CPU, but the HP dv7-1245dx was one of the few to use a 2.1GHz AMD Turion X2 Dual-Core RM-72. While we were able to use the dv7 for normal multitasking and media playback, the two AMD-powered systems in our lineup fell behind the pack in our benchmark tests.

- It has DDR2 RAM which is what $300 Netbooks run.  This is the type of setup that sparked the "Made for Vista" lawsuits. Sure, DDR3 RAM is new and slightly more expensive but why buy older technology?

- The screen is abysmal.  One reviewer said this model series "has the worst screen I have ever seen in my life. It's the 1440x900 screen and the viewing angles are so poor that even when sitting directly eye level with the screen it is totally washed out. If I go a little bit off-axis the screen results in a negative image. I was using the default settings. Unfortunately I didn't read reviews before i purchased."  Ouch!

- It is loaded up with trial crapware and trial antivirus software that will need to be purchased or wiped offf the machine.  Most people prefer to just format the drive and start with a fresh install of Windows (XP or 7).

-  The networking is five years old.  802.11G wireless and 100Mb Ethernet are surpassed by $300 Netbooks.  2004 called.  It wants its motherboard back.

- The battery is said to last 2.5 hours.  Real world usage on all laptops is always close to around half of that.  That likely means you can't watch a full movie on a battery charge.  It also means that it will probably poop out on that commuter flight from Los Angeles to San Francisco.

- The thing is almost two inches thick and weighs in at almost eight pounds.  Do you think that PC buyer wants to be hauling that thing around?  She didn't look like she spend her afternoons pumping iron on Venice Beach.

And, after all, this machine is a piece of ... hardware.  Microsoft makes software.  You could just as easily throw Linux on that laptop - or even Mac OS with the Hackintosh hack.

Again, the takeway is that Microsoft will install their software on an extremely shoddy computer.

And this poor girl, the actress that Microsoft hired to play a person who is not an actress, is going to get a heavy, bulky slow Vista Home machine with a poor display, old networking equipment and weak battery loaded up with crapware.

"I'm a PC!"

Bravo Microsoft.

If I were running the show over there, I'd point to the ASUS Eee 1000HE running XP.  It really is different from anything Apple (currently) has in its lineup and offers the user a genuinely good experience for a recession friendly price.

I've got a house full of

I've got a house full of Macs and PC's and servers of both varieties. I am a techie to the extreme.

I just bought an HP DV4 for one of my kids. T6500 CPU, 4 gigs, great specs on paper. Vista Home Premium. Cost half of what a Macbook would be. But am having some regrets.

Have had it only 2 days. It spent several hours downloading patches and then it would load more again even from the same vendor. The kid could not use it for 2 days. I thought this version of the DV4 only came out in late July. How could it be so out of date?

I want to remove the Norton Anti-virus and put something more civilized on, I have buik licences for another brand, but I am holding off as I know that I am for a big fight getting it off. I can see it is stealing large amounts of PCU resources. I know McAfee is worse...

Am still trying to figure out how I can transfer my kids Outlook express emails to the new machine. Have tried a couple of utilities, none have worked so far. Fudging around 10 directories deep.

The system is only 2 days old, is not in service yet and it has already inexplicably frozen a couple of times needed reboots. It often freezes when it is installing all these patches, cannot multitask. I think the patching is finally done, but...

Not a great out of box experience, the kid has lost interest and is back on the xBox. That product Microsoft sure got right. To the greta benefit of society...

I am really hoping that Windows 7 is more civiized. Apparently I get a free update in October.

The Macintosh experience is so utterly different, we got a new mini a few months ago for the kitchen:

Unbox it.

Watch a short welcome video, presumably while it patches.

Plug a cable into your old Mac and it transfers all your data, settings, PROGRAMS, web preferences and emails. Ready to go in under an hour, not days or weeks.

Then enjoy all the great software that comes with it, none of which is time limited.

See the happy face of the recipient.

The sea between these two experiences is so incredibly vast. Nothing to do with CPU or RAM or specs. You have to try both to see what it is all about.

Hardware might be cheap but Apple users are Elitiest

How pompous you sound in this article. Ok, lets look at the real facts.

1. Benchmarks mean nothing, especially to real world users. Don't believe me? Go into a store and ask a would be customer if they've seen or heard about any benchmarks on ANY of the PCs.

2. Although the benchmarks might be slower, for most users, they'll never notice it much. Especially when you are comparing a raw score of 886 for the AMD to a 897 for the C2duo. NO ONE would notice the difference in speed between those two numbers unless they had the two PCs side by side comparing the time it takes to convert a certain number of music or video files from one format to another. And even then it would only probably a mere few seconds.

3. DDR2 vs. DDR3 memory- It's been proven numerous times recently that that there is no difference in computer speed between these two types of memory, only PRICE-which ISN'T slightly more expensive but A LOT more-nearly double or tripple. Typical of an Apple Elitist to say "Oh it has the newer memory, it's better" when the other is just as good and CHEAPER. And lets be really honest here. The DDR2 memory HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH ANY "Made for Vista" lawsuits. That is just a flat out lie and YOU know it.

4. For that $700 price, Let's see what that customer gets with the HP that she doesn't get with ANY Apple in a store. More Memory, Flash Memory card slots, Wireless Remote Control, HDMI ports, ESATA ports, Dual headphone jacks, Hard drive protection against accidental dropping of the pc.

5. And finally, just as I suspected, you pulled out a couple of dissatisfied customers' quotes..a couple. If you go to Best Buy's site and look at the customer reviews, it gets 4.3 stars out of 5.

STEFFI955 writes "great price, fast speed, lots of memory, nice internet access"

BUYTHIS writes "the overall quality of this laptop is outstanding, dedicated graphics and dedicated graphic memory"

And MaggieMae has this to say "Great picture and sound"

So let's see... 14 out of 168 rated it 1 or 2 stars- the rest all rated it 3 stars or more- Oh yea, HORRIBLE machine. That's only a wopping 8% that weren't totally happy.

You're a typical Apple Elitist. You are the epitome of why people can't stand the Apple Fans and why so many of us don't like Apple. You can't play on the same playing field so you have to cheat to even try to win.

And since you mentioned the OS specifically - When Apple begins to allow their OS on non-apple branded machines, only then can it compare itself to Windows and reliability.

Really, the writer is a clear Apple bigot who obviously doesn't realize that NOT EVERYBODY is a brand-addicted fool. There are economic factors that do weigh on one's buying decisions especially on a piece of replaceable technology.

A new cheap laptop with Windows is a very viable option when compared to a Mac. All O/S arguments, design and form factors aside, a box with a keypad, screen and wireless pretty much meets the basic needs of most users.

He's an apple bigot for

He's an apple bigot for saying he would recommend a computer that isn't an apple?

He's a bigot for posting

He's a bigot for posting facts stating how poorly rated the components of a piece of hardware (that have nothing to do with Microsoft) are? That's a funny definition of bigot.
