Microsoft cloud security in Forefront

Tomorrow Microsoft is officially launching its Identity and Security Business Group with Doug Leland as its general manager. Formed last summer, Leland says the merging of the company's two separate teams, identity and security, reflects the thinking inside corporate IT operations, which, he says, conflate the two as being two aspects of an overriding issue: giving secure, role-based access to applications and information.
"Fifty percent of the customers we talked to converge security, identity and access as part of the same problem," Leland says.
One of the changes Microsoft is making to follow that trend is to converge its security, identity and access products and services under the Forefront brand. And one of the first new offerings to emerge will be Forefront Online Security for Exchange (FOSE).
This is a new service that lets IT choose to protect on-premises e-mail Exchange accounts from spam and malware with the the FOSE service. Leland says the new service should be available by year's end.
He also observes that the offering is a perfect blend of Microsoft's software + services approach to cloud computing, given that it is a security service offered for on-premises software.
Well, he would, wouldn't he?
