Today, Microsoft is announcing that it will add a Performance and Resource Optimization (PRO) module to Virtual Machine Manager 2008, which officially goes into beta today. VMM will be used to manage virtual machines created by Microsoft Hyper-V after it becomes available in Q3.
VMM, which is part of the company's System Center management suite, will also be able to manage virtual machines created by VMware, says Dai Vu, director of virtualization products and solutions. VMM uses other System Center tools to keep track of virtual machines under its wing. For example, Operations Manager, one of the System Center products, will track, say, transactions on SQL Server database, passing along the information to PRO. That module will compare the data to established policies and determine whether it is within acceptable limits or not. If not, it will inform VMM to take action, such as move the SQL Server virtual machine to another physical server with better performance. Because VMM is cross-platform, it could also execute the same policy for an Oracle data base running under VMware, says Vu. System Center with VMM will start at $765.
