Some good news for Macintosh users over the weekend. Microsoft Silverlight enabled Netflix are now available for streaming on a Macintosh near you. It is still in beta so expect that there might be a few bugs.
If you are OK with your Macintosh media streaming through a Microsoft product, you may be a good candidate for this type of application. I know most Mac users may prefer not to get their content through non-Apple provider.
Silverlight functions in much the same way as Adobe Flash acting as a platform on which rich media applications can exist. Windows users are also able to use the Silverlight "watch Instantly" functionality as well.
"Brent" states that this aint the final product:
- There may be bugs. We are logging all errors, but if you run into problems you can help out by posting details here in the blog comments.
- Not all movies are available to watch with Silverlight. You may notice errors or lower than normal quality when watching certain titles.
- Our new player works on PCs and Intel-based Macs.
- Windows users should be aware that if you opt in, you will need to use Silverlight on all the machines you use to watch instantly.
Whether you watch your movies on your computer or have a Mac Mini set up as a media center, you now have another legal alternative to the iTunes movie/video store with some different content options. Netflix touts new content like TV shows including Heroes, CSI and NCIS.
Mac users can log in for this location: http://www.netflix.com/silverlightoptin
Netflix had previously stated that the service for Macs would be available by the end of the year. With Christmas right around the corner, Netflix probably assumed sooner would be better than later.
