The World Is My Office

New gadget gives you 800 Kbps uploads from almost anywhere

SANTA BARBARA, CALIF. -- Sierra Wireless has come out with an Anywhere Computing enabler called the AT&T USBConnect 881. It's a super-fast USB gadget that connects your laptop to the Internet using 3G High Speed Packet Access (HSPA). I'm talking about upload speeds of between 500 Kbps and 800 Kbps and download speeds between 600 Kbps and 1,400 Kbps.

The upload speed is actually the most interesting thing here. AT&T is the first U.S. carrier to offer High Speed Uplink Packet Access (HSUPA), and this gadget's got it.

The device plugs into your laptop's USB port -- no software installation necessary (the software is on the device, not your system), unless you're using a Mac, in which case you need to download and install software here.

The USBConnect 881 weighs 1.25 ounces and is 3.7" long, 1.5" wide and .8" thick.

The data plan costs $60 a month for unlimited data (plus 2 cents per kilobyte for data outside the U.S. and Canada) if you agree to a two-year contract. If you want to go month-to-month, it'll set you back $110 for North America (including some coverage in Canada and Mexico). The International monthly rate is $140 per month. The device itself costs $200 after a rebate, or $50 after rebate if you sign up for the two-year AT&T contract.

The USBConnect 881 can be used in 139 countries, according to the company.
