The World Is My Office

New Google Maps Mobile gives GPS-like location

SANTA BARBARA, CALIF. -- Google rolled out a new beta of its Google Maps Mobile application that roughly pinpoints your location using the location of the cell towers your phone is connecting to.

The new software looks and works just like the previous version of Google Maps Mobile, but when you press zero on your phone's keypad, a blue dot shows up on the map representing an estimate of your location. The feature is called My Location.

The accuracy of My Location isn't nearly as good as GPS, but Google claims that accuracy improves with use.

The new maps version, which can be downloaded free at www.google.com/gmm or by sending the word "BLUEDOT" to 33669.
