New iPods coming, iPod Touch Nano?

With the recent news that Apple had just bought up half the world's flash storage supply and the September back-to-school season rapidly approaching, one thing should be on every Apple fan's mind.

iPods!

For the past 3 years, Apple has updated its iPod line in September and Apple has yet to introduce any new models (unless you count the 32Gb iPod Touch) this year.  So what does Apple have in store for us this September?

iPod Touch Nano?  Imagine an iPod Touch at the same size as today's Nano.  Apple proved that people would still love the video playing capabilities of the Classic even with the scrunched, high pixel per inch screen of the fat Nano.  If you double that screen size of the current Nano, the video playing capability becomes much better.  Add some Wifi and landscape keyboard enhancements through all of the applications and you might have a winner on your hands.  Apple might also be interested in having a sub $200 device from which to sell all of its iPhone applications, movies, TV shows and, of course, music.

It is hard to imagine that Apple will continue with the iPod Classic in its current form.  Perhaps we'll see the iPod Classic adopt the Touch's full screen and touch interface.  Imagine a 160Gb iPod Touch which gains just bit of thickness.  I think there would be a considerable market for this.

How about the iPod Touch?  What advancements could Apple build into its flagship iPod line?  The obvious answer is to look to its big brother, the iPhone for answers.  Could built-in speakers, Bluetooth, GPS, a camera, a microphone-in port be making its way into the device?  We already know that the iPhone and iPod touch lines are slated to be remote controls in the upcoming iPhone 2.0 Beta software.

Adding GPS makes the iPod Touch a platform for in-car navigation that would give any of the other makers (Garmin) a run for their money.  TomTom is releasing iPod/iPhone software through the App Store.  All the pieces are already in place.  That 8Gb-32Gb of space is plenty to store any mapped area someone desires.  It could also store other location based data and update itself by Wifi.

How about a camera version of the iPod?  Not just the standard 2 megapixel built-in either.  Something that could rival a point and click?  Remember that Apple made the first consumer grade digital camera called the Quicktake - it is in their heritage.  A new iPod Quicktake would  have to have a decent lens with optical zoom.  Apple could also make a darn good video recorder out of the iPod Touch which would utilize all of that built-in storage.  The Flip shows that it can be done and achieve moderate success.  Apple should capitalize on this.

But maybe Apple plans to go a different direction with the iPod Touch?  Could the device be the first in which Apple integrates WiMAX?  The biggest competition to the iPod Touch, if you can call it that, is the Nokia N810 and perhaps the EEE PCs - both of which are slated to get WiMAX capabilities this year.  Apple can't afford to miss this boat...if it ever comes in.  In conjunction with a mic-in port, WiMAX could also make VoIP options very interesting - Steve Jobs has already said that Apple would allow VoIP applications on the iPhone platform over WiFi.

What else?  Certainly you can think of other additions to the iPod line that no one has thought of yet?

What People Are Saying

I can't wait.

I can't wait.

Well...

To be honest the only things I want from a new ipod touch are:
-More memory
-A more precise way to skip/search through songs while they are playing (I don't have fat fingers but sometimes the skips (especially in podcasts) can be as big as 10 seconds!)
-Scrolling song/podcast names. Presently, if a song title is over about 20 letters you will NEVER be able to know its name is unless you check on iTunes!

well u should know what the

well u should know what the name of the song is and who likes 20 letter titles for songs?

No WiMax

Apple will never include WiMax in their products until there is nationwide antenna coverage and a market for it. It doesn't make any sense to include a technology that increases costs, but only a fraction of a percent of users can take advantage of.

Apple was a leader in WiFi because it is a LAN technology and they could control both the transmitter and the receiver: they created the AirPort router. But Apple is not a wide area network provider, and never will be.

WiMax is a non-starter in Apple products for the next 5 years, at least, because that is at least how long it will take for some broadband company to create wide coverage and prove market viability on a large scale.

iPod Touch Nano

I think you're way off about the video\camera\line-in possibilities for iPods. Apple doesn't make those sorts of goofy swiss army knife type of products to try and capitalize on every trend out there.

New ipods coming -- what a dumb article

This dumb trawl of what the new Ipods will have is almost completely devoid of imagination or awareness of the market.

What many people want (and Apple will deliver sooner or later) is centred on the WiFi -- using this too bidirectionally control a iTunes on a Mac mini (so requiring no monitor for a home music server) AND, best of all, streaming iTunes audio content to Airtunes/Airport -- an Ipod Touch that is your music source and the remote all in one (althought the battery would be an issue currently)...

Apple and the Quicktake+

Wasn't the Quicktake an Apple-branded Kodak
camera?

While I wish so much that

While I wish so much that these features will become true in the upcoming revamp of the Touch in September, I can't help shed my feelings that Apple will screw us over with just a mere storage bump, along with a few program updates.

Oh, and not to mention that after a few months of purchasing an iPod, I end up envying the guy next to my cube who purchased a newer version of the iPod, the "iPod Air".

Dammit, there's no end to this...

Nano/Touch

Nanotouch sounds like a great concept, but might run into serious battery constraints unless it's thickened. I don't think it could power a wifi radio for long. Also, you might not get more than 1 movie viewed before it dies.

ipod classic: There seem to be many people out there who are unwilling to consider an ipod without a clickwheel, so I don't think this format is dead yet.

touch upgrade: More capacity, clearly. (eventually we'll probably be given the choice between classic and touch with same capacities). I DO think the touch will someday gain speaker and mic to become a VOIP handset. And: are you ready for this? Maybe Apple will set up its own subscription-based VOIP service (ala Vonage) so they can get a piece of recurring revenue!

A bigger touch (aka tablet) is on its way sometime... Maybe that's where cell data access belongs, rather than on the current touch format.

As you might imagine, this is pure speculation.

No to WiMax

Why go for WiMax, when Apple has basically started to get a whole raft of wi-fi hotspots set up? The Touch could also potentially get a data only plan if they wanted to go down a route where carriers such as AT&T and also O2 could make a killing, by opening up their data networks to a device like the Touch.

With the ubiquity of network signal (and decent 3G signal in some countries) why not?

Just as the Touch could get GPS, why get an option on a 3G chip and data plan? It does wifi so why not extend that?
