New MacBook Pros to hurt MacBook Air sales?

If you believe the rumor mill, we are likely to see new MacBook Pros from Apple on any given Tuesday. Those machines will likely come in the same 15-inch and 17-inch size delineations as the current models. If you look at the pictures (below - from Engadget), you'll notice that there isn't much in the way of footprint size difference between the MacBook Air and the 15-inch MacBook Pros.

While differences in thinness (half inch) and weight (two pounds) are obviously big concerns for the mobile road warrior, most professionals would rather have the larger (15.4 vs. 13.3 inch) screen, the faster processor, more expandability and more storage space.

The new MacBook Pros are likely to get the new, flatter keyboard style and larger multi-touch trackpad that the MacBook Air currently has. Additionally, the MacBook Pro should recieve the latest 45nm processors from Intel - which are much better on power usage than the previous 65nm processors (the MacBook Air uses the previous generation 65nm processor in a smaller package as well).

If Apple adds built-in 3G/WiMAX to the Pro package or outfits it with an energy-saving SSD/Hard drive hybrid model, it might be the deal-breaker for a lot of would-be MacBook Air customers. That possibility might be reason at least to wait and see if you are shoppting for a new MacBook Air/Pro. If not this Tuesday, maybe the next. Or the next..or...

What People Are Saying

Combined into one?

I think the plan is to merge the two. The MBA isn't just a niche device, it's the future of the Macbook Pro.

Hot Air

Apple are the best. You shouldn't say bad things about Apple.

I don't think MBP sales and

I don't think MBP sales and MBA sales have anything to do with each other. They are aimed at different target markets. I'm a MBP kind of guy, I need the power, so the MBA isn't even on my radar of likely purchases. And most of the people I've encountered lately (more than I thought I would) who are talking about buying the Air, some as their first Mac, are people who would be using it for basic portable computing, not for heavy graphics or video.

Other than people who honestly need a really portable computer for basic purposes, the Air has probably taken one other small portion of potential MBP buyers, the ones who think aluminum is sexier than plastic but are otherwise unmoved by actual specs. People who, if you said, "this one's got like 7.2 kilofractal V-dram" they'd be like, "wow, that's awesome!" but later they'd only remember the part of the conversation where you both agreed it was "awesome"

Air is for light weights

My wife wants one, because she doesn't want to carry 5 pounds and because it looks cool. She is also a lightweight business user - i think there will be lots of folks like her that will gravitate to the air from windows just because of weight. And then they will never go back. I too would never buy an air, and I own a macbook pro 17. Need the video, ports and at more than 210 lbs, don't mind the weight. Might be some market overlap, but not much.

There are plenty of pc

There are plenty of pc laptops that compete with the air. There are laptops that are lighter, and without the compromises the air has made, including considerably longer battery life. The MBA may be the thinnest laptop available at retail, but it is not the world's thinnest, as there have been thinner laptops in the past, and it is not the lightest, the most powerful (even among ultraportables), and not the best feature/size/cost tradeoff.
