New mini laptop to cost under $300

SANTA BARBARA, CALIF. -- How low can they go? Since The ASUS Eee PC got super popular, competitors have been coming out of the woodwork, including Elonex, Everex, ECS, Acer, MSI, HP and others. Most of these companies have introduced aggressive pricing, but have struggled to approach ASUS's $400 entry-level price point. Now, another "killer" is planning an under-$300 laptop.

The company is Norhtec, a systems integrator based in Thailand, of all places, that specializes in tiny servers. The company is working on what they call the Gecko Laptop. The tiny system will be built by Quanta, and is powered by Linux Lite from Linpus Technologies.

The laptop probably has a seven-inch screen, possibly smaller. It has a pretty big keyboard and a touchpad. It's powered by a Via C7M ULV chip. Not much else is known about the Gecko.

According to reports, the company will announce the laptop soon, and it will sell for less than $300.

Small laptops

Dell makes a small laptop that weighs in at just 2.2lbs and costs only $349 and yes it does access the internet, with built in wireless capability. Target also sells some unknown brand mini-laptop that only costs $299 and has built in wireless capability too.

Perfect for online students

As an online student, I have just spent my entire 8 week session plastered in front of this computer. I want a *little* of my free time back, something like this would make my online textbooks (PDF documents), homework (MS Office word files) and online school access for daily discussions (required) all portable with the ability to surf the net if - with the right product that is...I could attend school without getting out of bed!! I really miss my husband and family after two months taking two gruelling classes. This would seem ideal compared to a PDA, the screen is bigger to view (and I have a tendancy to drop something small like a PDA :\). The two cost about the same -shrugs-.

I should mention...

I am in no way looking for a computer or laptop for my needs, just the parts of the computer/laptop that fit my needs so I can take my school work anywhere I want to do more of the things I'd like to; things like see my husband more often, visit with my family, free up time to play games and do the other activities I want to do! What I mean is, if I am able to work on school work anywhere, I can finish it quicker, and take back my free time!
This just seems perfect for online students (would probably be equally perfect for the same reasons for non-online students too!). Those who work full time jobs, they can take their school work to work and access it during their car pool or lunch; the students like me, who don't work, this is perfect for the low cost and the features. Just part of one ;)

Anyways, I felt the need to clarify my point which is we don't need an entire laptop nor do we want to pay the cost of one either. We obviously already have a computer or laptop - but something smaller, more compact, lighter and lets us remain on task is perfect =)

Not a laptop replacement

What do you want to really do with this? Basically if you are looking for something to connect to the Internet, check email and news, take it traveling this this seems to be a great $300 investment.
