New Treo to run Windows...Hell freezing over? Yes, but that's a good thing, right?
- IT TOPICS:Mobile & Wireless
Today's BlogWatch talked about the new Palm Treo 700 and how it will be running Windows CE (?) instead of Palm OS.
Richi points to some Treo users who grouse about the change saying they use the Treo because of the Palm OS. Judging from the first person accounts I've gotten from the likes of Buzz Bruggeman and some attorneys that I know that use them, this move will probably be a good thing. It couldn't get any worse. The Treos have had so many problems that Palm was slapped with a class action lawsuit.
And I love the one comment that the Treos are so succesful because they run Palm OS. Uhh, you have an odd way to judge success when most PDAs currently sold are Blackberries.
Also the review that touts Windows Mobile 5 as an advantage because you won't need BES, is also missing the mark. If you aren't getting BES for free with 20 or more units, you are getting a raw deal. And you don't NEED BES to use a Blackberry, even with Exchange, it just makes it A LOT easier for IT admins to deal with the units.
Now, I'm not saying the Blackberries are perfect devices after having to reprovision the same BB twice in two weeks because it conveniently "forgot" the user's password, but in general they have been pretty solid, particularly with OS 4.
And while I wish the current crop of Blackberries had the faster processor and more memory of the Treos, I'm glad I deployed the BBs as by all accounts the Treos are a nightmare by comparison.
So most Treo users will probably have much to cheer about when they get an upgraded model.
What I'd really like to see though is all of these devices to go cross platform. Should be able to choose the best enterprise management platform for the devices and mix and match devices to fit user preference and needs.
But I'll wake up in two years and nothing will have changed. You still won't be able to use Blackberries with Goodlink and won't be able to use Windows devices or Treos with BES.
