Shame on Sony! DRM rootkit being installed by protected Sony music CDs?

OK, when will companies learn that they DO NOT HAVE THE RIGHT to do whatever they want to protect works that they have copyrighted.

Case in point? Sony using a rootkit based Digital Rights Management (DRM) scheme to protect music CDs put out by their studios.

While it is ok to limit users of their products to the same uses as they would get with a book, it IS NOT flipping OK to do so without the EXPRESS knowledge of their customers and in such an underhanded and sneaky way.

Companies that work to undermine our court mandated and protected rights do not deserve our hard earned dollars.

Do companies not understand that by using these sorts of shadowy mechanisms that they further hurt their efforts not only to stop piracy but to bring consumers to their side of the argument.

Good game Sony and others who would follow your example, by treating your customers with an utter lack of respect, you are in fact making an explicit case for said customers to disregard your efforts to protect your works.

If Sony's actions aren't yet illegal, they may soon be if our legislatures continue to move to make malware, spyware and adware of this sort unlawful. Even if they are legal, I would certainly brand these acts as immoral and counter to the good of society.

And as they say, two wrongs don't make a right, but they certainly do serve to erode our rights.

I just want to close by saying how DISGUSTED I am that a company would stoop so low as to use the same technology employed by virus writing scum in order to further their financial interests. This type of behavior SHOULD NOT be accepted and companies like Sony should be slapped down mightily for pursuing such activities.

I for one refuse to buy ANY Sony product in the future until they publicly apologize for using such deplorable methods, cease and desist in their ignoble pursuits to protect their properties at all costs, work to further our rights to fair use of property that we PURCHASE and legally bind themselves from doing such acts in the future.

Hopefully, other people will realize how heinous this is and join me in boycotting Sony.

This nonsense has to stop and we as consumers have to stand up for our rights.

It was only a matter of time

It was only a matter of time before malicious use of the Rootkit was going to surface.
Now we have it.
Well known www.pandasoftware.com has already picked up a virus using the Sony / BRM trespass.
Following info is from the Panda newsletter:

Ryknos.A is a backdoor Trojan that opens port 8080 and connects to several IP addresses to receive remote control commands -such as downloading or running files- to take on the affected computer.

Ryknos.A installs itself on the Windows system directory under the name "$SYS$DRV.EXE". In this way, in systems with Sony Digital Rights Management software installed, it uses the rootkit included with this software to hide any file whose name starts with "$SYS$" from Windows Explorer.

I wonder how many other such nasties are lurking on CDs and DVDs ????

I have a few things to tell them about my opinion of thier policy of property trespass, interference with fair use, enablement of privacy invasion and my future purchase plans.

My comments were hasty. I

My comments were hasty. I had not really understood by what the article was saying. I agree that Sony has no business installing the DRM rootkit by the disguise of MUsic CDS. I did not see that the CDS were music CDS. Sony is only ruining its good name of selling music or other products. Only Sony is not known to sell a product by disguising it as music. If it wants to protect music may be it should consider financing alternate methods of delivering the internet service as discussed at the linked site so that people won't resort to piracy.
