Slashdotted: Why Windows Vista won't suck

Ever think to yourself, "why would I ever upgrade to another version of Windows? What I'm using now works just fine for what I need."

Why indeed. Well, over on Extremetech, they detail all the reasons why upgrading will be good for most people.

Things that caught my eye?

Better task and process management. In other words, your system won't slow to a crawl just because you started a background task like an antivirus check.

Intelligent application caching. Sounds like the system will keep track of the applications and files that you use and load your most frequently used apps into memory. This could help speed things up when opening up documents or playing your favorite songs.

Faster networking stack. From what I've read and heard, the new TCP/IP stack in Vista will substantially improve response times and overall speed of network connections.

Better driver subsystems. Most drivers will now run in more isolated modes, so system crashes should happen even less often than they do now.

And yeah, it has the usual assortment of security fixes, UI upgrades and whatnot, but I think that the 4 things I wrote about above are so far the most compelling reasons for me to upgrade.

Will they get the Mac crowd to switch? Probably not, but if Vista performs well, it might stop people from leaving for other operating systems.
