Slashdotted: Why Windows Vista won't suck

Ever think to yourself, "why would I ever upgrade to another version of Windows? What I'm using now works just fine for what I need."

Why indeed. Well, over on Extremetech, they detail all the reasons why upgrading will be good for most people.

Things that caught my eye?

Better task and process management. In other words, your system won't slow to a crawl just because you started a background task like an antivirus check.

Intelligent application caching. Sounds like the system will keep track of the applications and files that you use and load your most frequently used apps into memory. This could help speed things up when opening up documents or playing your favorite songs.

Faster networking stack. From what I've read and heard, the new TCP/IP stack in Vista will substantially improve response times and overall speed of network connections.

Better driver subsystems. Most drivers will now run in more isolated modes, so system crashes should happen even less often than they do now.

And yeah, it has the usual assortment of security fixes, UI upgrades and whatnot, but I think that the 4 things I wrote about above are so far the most compelling reasons for me to upgrade.

Will they get the Mac crowd to switch? Probably not, but if Vista performs well, it might stop people from leaving for other operating systems.

What People Are Saying

"Intelligent application

"Intelligent application caching. Sounds like the system will keep track of the applications and files that you use and load your most frequently used apps into memory."

Why do I get a sinking feeling about this? How is this different from all the crapware that loads itself at startup now to "help" speed up their parent application's startup? Of course, this makes starting up the computer take longer, and more memory is committed to tasks that aren't actually running, slowing everything down. Now, not only do I have to switch this behavior off during installs, Windows will start doing it to me automatically!

How about this? Only load stuff that is actually running per a users request. That way, the computer will startup quicker, and whatever I actually choose to do will actually have more resources available to run its best. I'd rather have a machine devoted to doing what I request, instead of trying to anticipate what I'll do today based on what I did yesterday.

When is Micro$oft going to start letting ME decide what I want to do today?

windows vista is still years

windows vista is still years behind mac os x's stability, ease of use, asthetics, and features... apple releases products ahead of schedule, while microsoft delays everything... soon microsoft will be so far behind, their newest OS's will be obsolete upon release... oh wait, that's already the case...

Why no mention of the fact

Why no mention of the fact that Vista will be filled to the brim with various types of DRM?

Apparently everyone likes being told what they can and can’t do with their computer.

Not me. I’ll stick with XP for the time being. If in the future I need a more current OS, perhaps there will be a more user-friendly Linux distribution available.

I really like Windows XP a

I really like Windows XP a lot.It runs very well on a 64 bit system. If your into a max system then you should really check out the AMD Athlon 64 Processor in a box,and Giabyte motherboards.

I would love to try out vista 64 on my system. But I guess I will have to wait until December 1, 2006 (my approximate guess on when Vista will hit the shelves).

As far as I know, XP does

As far as I know, XP does allow usage of up to 4 gig of memory. How well it manages that much memory is another question entirely.

Sounds like Vista will probably be a bit better at memory management so we will see.

But to be honest, in my own experiences, I haven't seen a scenario where a system made full usage of even 2 gigs of memory. Not that that means much. :)

Memory was cheap recently

Memory was cheap recently and many of us took our systems to 4 gig. XP Pro only allows the use of 3 gig or so (as far as I've been able to see). Will Vista allow the full 4 gig usage under 32 bit?

Windows was supposed to be a

Windows was supposed to be a PREEMPTIVE MULTITASKING OS a long time ago. In reality it is a kludged system that has had MANY of its internal subsystems REWRITTEN FROM GROUND UP numerous times. This is just another in a long repeatetive cycle. In order to GET-IT-RIGHT MS would have to SCRAP BACKWARD COMPATABILITY with passed OS and Win Apps. That will NEVER HAPPEN. Which means Windows Vista will still be CRAPWARE !
