A Day in the Life of an Information Security Officer

No talent in the U.S. according to McAfee

When I read this story about McAfee wanting to buy up security technology companies, I thought about a company I know that is looking to be acquired.  So I read the entire article first instead of forwarding it on to my colleages at that company.

Lo and behold, at the bottom of the article, Sridhar Jayanthi, head of the company's operations in India, is reported to have said these words, "There is a shortage in the US of security professionals and researchers, and in India the company found a large and trainable talent base."

I'm not buying it.  There are plenty of educated, talented, and available security professionals and researchers in the United States.  And if there were not, why would McAfee not want to train U.S. citizens?  The truth is that McAfee found a large, cheap, hopefully trainable employment pool in India.

I don't want to outsource our security to India.  Product development and customer support needs to remain in the United States.  Just my two security cents for the day.

What People Are Saying

I can only say that I am

I can only say that I am tired to death of trying to get support from Dell and McAfee and other companies and instead hearing gibberish in an accent I can't understand. And when I can understand they are reading from a script and don't know what I am saying. Where are all the Indians who supposedly speak English fluently? McAfee has the worst customer service in the world as does Dell. What ever language they are speaking, it ain't English.

Those are OUR jobs you have in India and when we get this lunatic out of the White House we are taking them back.

Listen up guys.. for those

Listen up guys.. for those who think Symantec (Norton as some the guys refer to as) has not outsourced to India or anywhere else .. think again and google. so has Trend and Microsoft (infact MS has a good 50000 people base in India)

IBM (has 100000 people in India)HP has 45,000 (in Bangalore Alone).... as far as technical skills are concerned, India has far more qualified people than you could care to think. Bangalore alone has 25,000+ Engineering Grads every year. Any one care to think if Indians weren't good would so many jobs been created?

McAfee has what is called as the Follow the sun model which has support centers across the globe Plano supports US, Aylesbury, UK supports EMEA . Japan, India and Australia supports Japan and APAC ... so read and understand before you guys crib about loosing jobs.....

as far Americans being better is concerned, yes they are ...only in selling guns to 15 year olds killing classmates over petty quarrels... ands of course making war in the name of justice ... Did you know that the so called "Intelligent Americans" even outsource their homework to India? I mean what can a person learn if he/she outsources his/her homework?

oh by the way most Indians can speak atleast 3 languages fluently and can read / write English and Code effectively and most (if not all) major software that is available in the market has India in some form or the other (Including Win OS and MS office, antivirus, adobe photoshop .. you name it )

Stop Cribbing about loosing jobs and start concentrating on working. Indians work hard and their average salaries has gone up more than 100 times in the last 15 years where has yours gone ?

Voloshin, McAfee did actually win the best Support award.... FYI..
http://www.mcafee.com/us/about/press/corporate/2006/20060614_174510_y.html

i wish people would stop being lazy and cribbing about costs and loosing jobs and start working instead.

Well, Some of the other

Well, Some of the other companies I have dealt with so far including D-Link for instance have their support bases in the States and I simply have not experienced the kind of customer service quality display ever, atleast not as much as Mr. Voloshin is probably getting for his so called 'premium' services. In accordance with whatever was said before by someone who chose to think rather than react, Macro economies are infact Global economies that dictate and influence some of the most significant aspects of Conception, Manufacturing, Maintenance & Support Services ever!

Cost effectiveness with optimal quality at that cost or whatever you are willing to spend on the interest of an US customer is what dictates soom of the decisions taken towards servicing global consumerism. If not doing so actually has you take a backward step as compared to someone else who is willing to employ his money, interests and responsibilities globally, it would simply not make enough business sense would it?

Its difficult to believe that a common belief is that simply keeping everything inside and not outsourced/ offshored indicates and ensures Quality, if anything it is only a perception dawning on the sun of insecurities associated with losing of jobs which could have been prospectively handed over to US counterparts. Just a perception is all it is.

How about outsourced projects to Canada? Is someone crying foul over them as well? Money and Technology and being spent, conceived and deputed globally, and this is what global consumerism is all about.

My two cents

Mr Vaid comments he comes

Mr Vaid comments he comes from McAfee India and to trust him about his statement that "they have the best engineering anti-virus team ...in the whole world". What BS, what arrogance comes out of his mouth. Where is the data to prove your statement or are you just "drinking the kool aid" in India?

Next you will be telling us that McAfee has the best customer service in the world....

I suppose, getting cheap

I suppose, getting cheap specialist in India, is certainly on the reason for outsourcing.
No company will ever risk there business for
saving some money.

The reason for outsourcing is Quality!
It does not mean that America does not have enough skilled workers...but it helps the company to grow globally and have it presence felt all over the world!

Even indian companies like Infosys, TCS etc have big offices in US with more then 5 thousand employees...
so this is no reason to crib but to understand how economy works globally!
And its not just about software outsourcing... Every business on earth will have worldwide employee base. Period.

Seems like all the cacophony

Seems like all the cacophony about the sub-continental markets is only being created by empty vessels. Out-sourcing/ Off-shoring and now Rightsourcing are only the new rules of the business. They provide much more than just the cost advantage. It gives a competitive edge to implement better solutions and better quality of work. Its not about India and China being able to provide a 2.6 billion people market but will they be able to cater to fulfill the all-rising demands of manpower. Of course, one does get the cost advantage but what is benefitting the American firms is clear quest among the Indian/ Sub-Continental vendors to provide the best services. To get the best for the amount you pay is certainly advantage to all. So if Mc Afee is planning to tap and train more of people who can be better utilised then why not?

Stop reacting and start

Stop reacting and start thinking!

Don't get too carried away by this article.
Show me one person who ever believed that our country lacked skilled technicians & assembly line workers through the last couple of decades. Is that the real reason why most of the goods used by this country are manufactured or assembled in 100+ countries outside the USA?

It is not just cheap labor. Global economics are very complicated and they drive the corporate strategies of most multi-national companies in the world we live in. Most of these companies dont have a choice. They have to "fit" their global models based on the latest market trends & opportunities.

"Cheap" is a tricky word and the C-level execs love it as it enables them to fill their coffers at the expense of the sweat & toil of the labor of their employee/contractor workforce across the world. They don't necessarily care about the country they are doing business in. Pride, patriotism and loyalties aside - their primary goal is to develop their business and not to develop the country.

The sooner this country (& we - citizens) realize that this world's boundaries don't end around the geographic boundaries of USA and that we DEPEND on the global economies for our own survival (remember guys - most of the products we create/manage are sold to billions of the world and not just to the 300 million in our country).

It is time to broaden our horizons & embrace the world - just as the internet does.

Cheers!

I agree, Americans should

I agree, Americans should look at the comanies who outsource all business to foreign land, start favoring companies employing Americans.
If they want to be cheap lets give them an empty hand!

Here is a concept most

Here is a concept most Americans really can’t come to grips with. They think American businesses really care about this country. They don’t. Look at the extravagant salaries given to CEOs and upper management while the worker bee is told how they have to cut costs, which results in little to no salary increases this year. If you think boycotting there products will get them to take notice, they will just restructure their markets to China or India with a combined market of 2.4 billion new customers. Compare this to our meager 300 million customers in this country. This is their bottom line and if you don’t like it, you can apply to be a floor greeter at Wal-Mart.
