A Day in the Life of an Information Security Officer

Insiders are the real threat

It can never be stressed enough that your own employees can be your worst enemies.  One of the things I have been working on the past year is tightening up permissions and access controls inside our network.

This story tells us that an employee at Citibank obtained access to customer credit card accounts, raised the limit, and had a new card sent to her relatives.

Perimeter security is important.  But as the saying goes, networks can be like M&M candies - hard on the outside and soft on the inside.  Internal network security matters as much as external network security.

What People Are Saying

I agree with the previous

I agree with the previous post and the article. Most damage comes from current or previous disgruntled employees who retain system access.
We provide a solution that eliminates this risk and prevents downloading of data by the fact that we eliminate the system (PC) unit with our Software as a Service solution. We lock out websites, stop spyware, malware, viruses, SPAM and much more.
Once the temptation is removed the threats are minimized. Data is any company's most important asset and risk.

As a member of my company's security team, one of the hardest--but most necessary--things I do is to tell users in education sessions that I am worried about THEIR behavior and what impact it could have on our security posture. But protecting my company and our clients is worth more than any hurt feelings.
