The Security Sector

Security isn't always convenient

The need for security is one of those facts of life in the world of computing. And, as this CW article points out, features in the upcoming Vista OS will likely "irritate" some users so much that businesses may delay upgrading to this newest Windows incarnation. To gain more security, you lose a certain measure of convenience. This reminds me of how it was back in the 1960's when some drivers (and passengers) felt seat belts were "inconvenient," to the extent that many of us refused to use them. The cold hard fact is that hardened security isn't going to make everyone happy and yes, there needs to be a balance between the two (security and convenience). If you haven't done so already, you should also take a look at these 10 Immutable Laws of Security.

No kidding: this has been the case with EVERY new MS O/S.

Yikes, how scary, Users may

Yikes, how scary, Users may finally be limited in what they can do on a computer. No more replacing OS files, no more full access to a system so viruses and spyware can install themselves in system space. What will we do, what will we do!

Of course this has ALWAYS been available, but most Admin's have choosen to let users run as Admin's on their box instead of help fight the good fight and actually call software vendors and demand that their software run as a "user" on PC's. Now it looks like Microsoft is going to help make better Admin's out of all the bad ones out there.
