Xbox Live: All your credit cards are belong to us!

Geometry Wars for the Xbox 360 is very addictive. Play it for 5 minutes and you get hooked.

It's such a simple yet amazingly challenging game.

Mix the controls of Robotron 2084, a bit of asteroids, some physics ala Hawkings, the protagonist's ship from the game Tempest and lots of geometric shapes hell bent on your destruction and you got an instant classic ... oh and the background music is pretty cool too.

Anyhow, to really get the most out of it, you have to buy the unlocked version. Otherwise you are limited to 4 minutes of play time, which really isn't enough once you get pretty good.

Getting to the point at hand, we have an Xbox 360 at work that we play oftentimes during lunch and a bunch of us really like Geometry Wars.

We had been wanting to unlock it for some time, but no one had been willing to do the $6.50 charge to their credit card. So i decided to take the plunge.

As the Governator once famously said "Big Mistake".

So now my credit card is associated with the Xbox Live account that was set up on the 360. Problem is that this account is a shared account ... As in, it's the one we all use to play games like DOA4.

I figured, no problem, I'll just call Microsoft and have them remove the credit card from the account.

No dice. Not only won't they do it, but apparently, they can't do it and this is "by design" as if that makes up for this oversight.

So what are my choices? Delete the account in question or change the credit card used to another card.

I should add that the security involved with the account on the Xbox itself is very weak. Yeah, there's the 4 "digit" passcode that can be entered in, but there's very little protection (if any) when someone tries to purchase more Live points.

OK, so you are probably thinking "big deal, just delete the account and be done with it", but my point is this shouldn't be necessary. I can think of many scenarios where one would want to just delete the credit card from the account instead of having to jump through unnecessary hoops to either change it or to delete the account.

But Microsoft seems to have a policy of one Account per user and has purposely set up the system to enforce this at all costs.

I gotta tell you, nothing is more frustrating than calling a company's support only to be told that they can't and won't help you ... Oh so sorry, but you are screwed!

I've never been mad at Microsoft or their support until that call. And you know what bloggers do when they get mad ... they blog.

What should I have done instead of wedding my credit card to the account? Apparently I should have bought a prepaid card. Well gee, how about you guys frickin' give that option at the purchase screen. Or even better warn people with a huge blinking red sign that says *Klaxon alarms sounding* "WARNING, ONCE YOU ENTER YOUR CREDIT CARD HERE IT WILL BE IRRETRIEVABLY LINKED TO THE CURRENT XBOX LIVE ACCOUNT" *Klaxon alarms end*

By the way, if you are wondering why deleting the account is such a big deal, well as far as I can tell all of the saved data linked to that account will dissappear so unless I can find a way to move this data to a different account/profile all of our hardwork in DOA4 and PGR3 will go the way of the Dodo.

Keir -- way to go!

I probably won't go to this much trouble, because the expiration date of the card that they have on file has now expired. But it did piss me off that I couldn't delete it! What were they thinking!?

all you do is fill in the fields and WOOOOOSH! you have your account back :)

I tried a free 2-month

I tried a free 2-month subscription back in March for my original Xbox, and decided not to renew it until I finished my spring quarter, due to a sudden decrease in my study time. So here I am trying to do this account recovery thing and I can't for the life of me figure out how to renew my account that I cancelled back in May. Do I have to create a new account and start all over, or is there some way I can recover my account and keep all the ranks and goodies that I earned?

Arkile: Don't be a dweeb.

Arkile: Don't be a dweeb. The guy said it is the shared work account. The average person... heck, the average GAMER's life does not revolve around gamerscores. It's much easier to just have a single shared account than to have a different account for every user.

But yes, you can delete the account and keep all the game saves. That didn't come with the latest update, that came with the first update a couple of months ago.

Final answer: Yes, it's ridiculous that you don't need a credit card to sign up for an account, but once you put one in there you cannot remove it, only change it. There are however different ways of getting around this though. None of them are as easy as it should be, but they all work. You can delete the current account, but I don't really suggest it. If something were to happen and you lost a downloaded game for some reason (it happens, stolen or damaged hardware to name just a few things that could happen) you would have to pay for it again. As it is now, that purchased info is linked to the account, so if your 360 caught on fire today, you could sign in and redownload everything for free.

Disabling premium content or changing/invalidating your card information is probably the best way to go.

hmm... heres an idea. DONT

hmm... heres an idea. DONT SHARE A GAMERTAG U ******* moron. this is what gamerscore cheaters get.

Another thing you can try is

Another thing you can try is to try changing (not deleting) the credit card on the account. If you're allowed to do this, get a small prepaid credit card, change the account to that card, and spend it away on something useful.

Actually, with the latest

Actually, with the latest Xbox Live patch, you can delete an account but keep all the saves and achievements, and then transfer them to a different account. I would recommend going to www.gamefaqs.com and checking out the Xbox 360 guide on exactly how to do this. Ask for help on the official Xbox forums if you're not 100% sure.

I agree we should be able to

I agree we should be able to remove our credit cards. i paid for a 3 month sub when i started with live and my plans were to then start going to game stop and buying the one year cards because i also get ms points but what will happen when MS decides to charge my card early and ive bought a year card. I highly doubt they will refund me or componsate me in any way. And as for you mr anonymous you cant stop the auto renew and dont try to act like you have never had a typo when you were angry or that you have never made a mistake.
