Class action lawsuit against Microsoft

Is there really justice in the world?  Possibly.  This story states that Microsoft is facing a class-action lawsuit over the WGA tool.

"The suit against Microsoft contends that the company misled users in delivering WGA to computers, masking it under batches of monthly updates that often include critical security patches. It asks Microsoft to delete all data collected by WGA and provide users with the ability to remove the software from their computers, in addition to damages."

I think this is great and here's why.  What Microsoft did was wrong.  You can't trick your customers into downloading software they didn't ask for and don't want.  You can't make your customers allow you to control what happens on their networks.

I ran through all the details in my head again regarding what it would take to switch to a linux desktop in the enterprise.  I conducted a six month test to see if it was feasible.  I decided that while we could solve the technical difficulties, our users would not be able to adjust, at least not now.  But, this whole WGA spyware thing got me going in that direction again.  I wish there was a viable and supportable alternative to Microsoft.

What People Are Saying

I am getting sick of these

I am getting sick of these Linux convert excuses. Even though there is some truth to them, Linux gets better and easier to use every year. The last distro I installed took 10 min. with very little interaction with and knowledge of the installer. All software I used is just as easy to run and use as Windows stuff. Installing other software on Linux is getting easier too. It can be cofigured many different ways for different level users.

You wont have to worry about buying conterfeit OS's from companies like Microcity4less.com!

Happened to me and after being genuine for over a year, I lost my money and got zero support on how to deal with it except to buy it again. So much for WGA.

The more you suport Linux, the quicker it becomes better. The long run investment is the better choice. Some of the best software out there is built on Linux. That's gotta tell ya something.

To what degree would you

To what degree would you protect yourself, your family and your belongings? What would you do to catch individuals who are stealing from you? Why do people work or start a business?

As you answer these questions put Microsoft or any corporation in place of I would. What has California and or Oregon done to stop the theft of products and services. If you are honest and have a clean histroy, you should have no issues. I have run XP Pro for a number of years and am very happy.

Basically, when is stealing OK?

I'm told in your article

I'm told in your article that I had a choice as to whether WGA was installed. I wasn't; it was listed as a high-priority security update and installed itself without any interaction from me. If WGA ran once when my computer started, and never interfered with my computer's operation thereafter, I *might* consider it benign, or even beneficial if it allowed Microsoft to lower the price for Windows (because the cost of development is distributed over a wider range of customers). But I don't see Microsoft lowering my costs, and I see Microsoft adding a toll in terms of memory, CPU, and disk use (I've noticed a LOT more hard drive activity since the date WGA went in) and invasion of my privacy with no gain for myself in the mix. Where do I sign up to become a plaintiff in this suit?

WGA made my "old" computer

WGA made my "old" computer inoperable. It could not even boot; I imagine because other malware monitors and WGA were fighting each other disabling one another. So how do you remove all those "helpful" programs except maybe McAfee. Impossible without reformating which would loose everything else. My solution...no solution. Now I need an IT to help me find and save the paid for programs and a few good freebies, pics, etc. without putting the two harddrives on my new computer and not gum my new machine up. WGA sucks and it is definetly malware.
