A Day in the Life of an Information Security Officer

And another lawsuit against Microsoft

Keep the stories coming!  What is interesting to me is, "WGA gathers data that can easily identify individual PCs, and WGA can be modified remotely to collect additional information at Microsoft's initiation.  WGA collects a computers IP address, BIOS data, system version and local language and settings information..."

The scary part is that Microsoft can remotely initiate data collection without your knowledge or consent.  I have to agree with security researchers - this is spyware.

The suit asks, according to the story, for Microsoft to provide compensation to injured parties and to release a removal tool.  There's got to be another way for Microsoft to stem the tide of software piracy.  I am a law abiding citizen and pay for my software licenses.  I don't appreciate the invasive technique Microsoft is using in their campaign against piracy.  It appears that I am not the only one.

What People Are Saying

Microsoft is lying to its

Microsoft is lying to its customers.

Before downloading the genuine advantage software, it says this will be for the good of the customer. Better service, better updates and etc.

But it is nothing close to the benefit of the customer.

It should openly state that this is for their own. And WGA is a software running and consuming system resources, occupying hard drive space for the good of MS.

Otherwise this is totally fooling the customers. And I believe such acts are against consumer rights.

And that is a major problem for those who don't have internet connection. I don't remember MS saying its software requires an internet connection on the requirements list.

Don't even beleive that one

Don't even beleive that one person is responsible for the problems with windows.
all the other OS's out there will have the same problems as more users change to apple or any other flavor you chose.

Well get this , back when I

Well get this , back when I had Win98 I did an update on my Wife's puter and her puter lost key files and Win98 wouldn't work it kept locking up. I tried several times to reload 98 but it would not work .... Mind you mine was on auto update and low and behold a week later mine did an update in the middle of the night and the next morning it was doing the same things . I know MS had something to do with it .... So we bought 2 OS of XP PRO and now we are both having problems with a program called MSMSGS.EXE the only way I have been able to stop it from loading down my processor to 100% is to go through task manager and end program and not reboot our systems I know that is how MS is collecting information ... I contacted MS support and they gave me a bunch of BS solutions that didn't work and finally told me to contact MSN as it was their program and not their problem ... but you know the funny thing is , I don't even have MSN active on our systems ... I continue tohunt for the truth and when I get it Bill Gates is going to lose his company and go to jail for a very long time

Microsoft wga virus

Microsoft wga virus spyware

I no of no other company who could get away with selling sutch a faulty product as windows then exspect their customers to put up with the constant stream of patches & upgrades to keep it functioning. then having conned everyone into alowing automatic updates they then use it to download spyware & malicious programs like service pack 2 which with no prior warning renders any native dos program inopperative but also renders some of their own products un useable namely Ms Money 2000.
surely this behaviour borders on criminal activity.
question is what is being done about it or has microsoft bought off all the powers that be.
Yet more sinister comparisons to the novel by George Orwell.

That last comment was meant

That last comment was meant to be towards the guy named "Walt".

You're probably one of those

You're probably one of those people who wouldn't be against the music industry making CD's that you can only play 5 times and then have to pay for a licence to play it more.

I think I have a question

I think I have a question about the WGA program that nobody can answer. Why does Microsoft need certain parts of your IP address to ensure that your copy of windows is genuine? The more I research this program, the more questions I have about it, and none of them are good. I agree with Mr. Anonymous on this one and will also go away quietly. I am not going to engage in a "flame war" about this with anyone. I believe that they will lose these lawsuits and prove that they should not have done this. M$ does have the right to protect its propery, but this is not how to do it (in my opinion). They should have made the activation process better when you first install the OS.

Arguing with you Microsoft

Arguing with you Microsoft supporters is like “saddling a dead horse, then proclaiming to the world that you will win the next Kentucky Derby”. WGA can be modified to collect additional information. I have no doubt that they will push the limits of this program to the max because they are going to lose these lawsuits. This is spyware and I will just go away like you have asked me too. It is a dead issue to me and don’t bother posting a response. I will not answer.
P.S.----I win!

In the end if you dont like Microsoft, quit your bitching and buy a Mac or install any flavor of Linux. There is still a BeOS out there. Whatever... just QUIT your incessant WHINING and GO AWAY!!!!!!

Hey Jon, Your absolutely

Hey Jon,

Your absolutely right! Microsoft did have to break the monopoly Apple had on education.

Far too long did Apple supply the students with outdated equipment that did not prepare them for real world environments. Most of the time this was not a donation but rather a "discount"

I remember servicing the crap myself and thinking..."why doesn't somebody do something about this?". Well, their time came (thankfully!).

The business world runs Microsoft, because it works and their is far more support.
Apple was the one who kept you locked into their products by placing heavy ristrictions and licensing fees on other manufacturers who wished to produce hardware for their systems. They finally got wise.

BTW Jon, what OS do you run?

FYI, Monopolies exist because we let and most times support it. In this day and age they are not a monopoly anyway, the people now have a choice. Even at HP they have servers and workstationswith Linux . Dell has several no MS options for every server they sell. Every system sold by IBM has the option for a non-MS OS (every one!!!).

Don't try to sit there and tell me that Microsoft is a monopoly. Put down the crack pipe, slide out from behind the computer (careful not to spill the Cheetos), and come join the rest of us in the real world.
