The Security Sector

Lack of resources causes frustration about security!

According to the respondents of the survey mentioned in this article,
we've been left pretty demoralized in the wake of all the recent data
security breaches. Frankly, I'm not surprised. (Incidentally, the survey
queried industry professionals.) I agree, that not only can't users
readily determine they've even been compromized, but many can't prevent
breaches, either. Actually, it's not that they're unable to, but really
more a matter of they don't have adequate resources to. The sad fact is,
even though they're not being backed up in their requests for financing
security the way they want it, they are being blamed when breaches and
lapses in security arise. No wonder they feel frustrated!

What People Are Saying

But the beauty of management

But the beauty of management is that when something goes wrong, they'll say they were not sufficiently educated on the risks by the "security folks" hence it's not really their fault.

My personal opinion is that security is mostly well appreciated by security folks, unfortunately not well appreciated by non-security folks ..

Mila, I agree with

Mila, I agree with that....but some of us (at large companies, even) are left doing the best we can with few resources, fewer dollars because the boys in the boardroom don't think a breach will happen to them. Security doesn't bring in hard dollars and they don't see the money that's left on the table. And when you have one company like the one above dealing with clients (in the B to B world) who have the same attitude, Security (and Quality, Privacy, BC/DR, etc) do the best you can with what you have.

Many of these companies are

Many of these companies are giving up without carefully researching options that are out there. Small businesses especially might feel like they do not have adequate financial resources to host an IT department or to equip their computers with the highest quality security software. Others are simply not educated on the risks of lacking proper measures of protection.

Whatever it is, investing in time and money to research and implement security solutions will prove valuable to a company of any size. It can prevent lawsuits, give the company an edge over its competitors and most importantly establish and maintain trusted relationships with customers. In the end, lacking protection of computer systems, customer data and other corporate information will cost more than investing in security software.
